Question about insurance for those that are teachers...

For those of you that are teachers, what do you have to do to get your baby on your insurance. DH is a teacher and I told them that according to what I've heard he has to tell the school that he needs to add the baby to his insurance 30 days after the baby is born. How long does it take for the baby to be added. I think the school has to let the board of ED know. The only problem is that the baby is due May 26 and school ends 4 weeks after that. So I'm fearing that we'll have to wait until the summer is over or worse until the new year starts. That's what they did when DH added me to his insurance...

I really need some feedback on this

I do not have kids yet, but if you look on the back of the GHI card, if DH has that insurance, it says to call them up, I would also let the school know so the baby can be added. Just my opinion. HTHChat Icon

I called GHI and they are the ones that told me that DH had to let the school know. I was just wondering how long it took to officially get the baby on. I asked GHI and they said they didn't know because DH is the one who has to talk to the school and then the school is the one who has to let the Board of ED know.

I'm in a similar situation- I'm due over the summer. I'm going to contact the Board office (personnel) to find out the details. The baby should be on the policy immediately.

As I recall, the baby is covered under your insurance for the first month meanwhile you should notify the school and you will get the new insurance card once your coverage ends.

I teach in NYC and I had to let the school know. I called GHI first and they said that I had to let the DOE know and they'd process the paperwork. I'd recommend getting a copy of the paperwork to keep over the summer and the address/fax # of where you'd need to send it. YOu'll also need to provide a copy of the baby's footprints and birth certificate.

I am also a teacher for NYC. WHen I added my husband (we got married over the summer) my payroll sec. pre dated the papers and I mailed them in after the wedding.
PErhaps he can talk to his sec and they can work something out.
Good Luck, I am sure its nothing to worry about. Insurance companies should be used to this.

I also work for the Board of Ed and just had my baby in November. I called my secretary and I know this is bad, but I do not remember if she had me fill out paperwork or not! I was able to go to the doctor in the beginning with my son without a problem though.

My insurance is the primary one because of the birthday rule...Chat Icon Chat Icon

What I'm going to do is have DH talk to the secretary like next week and see if he can any paperwork or just see what she says. I just hope it's something that will take a few months because I remember after we got married in July of 2003 they didn't start me until Jan of 2004. DH told them that he was adding me before school was out for the summer. I should have been on his insurance right away. This is what scares me about them adding the baby on, that they will make us wait until the new year like they did with me. It's so silly and doesn't make any sense at all.

I should find out from my insurance if the baby is covered for the first month. I have Oxford.

You just call the insurance company the day after the baby is born and alert them to the fact. Then call the benefits administrator for the school/union. They will add the baby quickly.
All babies are covered by your insurance immediately as long as you add them in the first 30 days to your policy. I think that is a law. So call your benefits administrator and get their specific policy on how to add the baby.

See i've called the insurance already, which is GHI and they just said that we have to notify the school and they are the ones that have to tell the Board of ED.

So we have to call the union too is that it?

Re: Question about insurance for those that are teachers...

Ok so I just called my insurance and they said that the baby would be covered under mine for 31 days after the process the paper work. I have the form already so after the baby is born I have to call up my insurance and let them know about the baby being born, just so they have it for their records and then I have to call my boss so he can sign that form and send it in to them. Since I have the form already I am going to bring it in and keep in the insurance file here at work so at least my boss will already have it.

Now I hope I won't have a problem with DH's insurance. He's gotta let them know...
