Low Progesterone

Has anyone during pregnancy been told they have low progesterone?

Were you given supplements to take?

Any advice ? (yes I was just told my progesterone levels came back borderline "low" and the dumb nurse kind of freaked me out about it on the phone...Chat Icon)

I'll need to have my blood monitored 1x a week until the level hits normal..

Should I be worried

Re: Low Progesterone

I think if it's low you're suppose to use a cream/suppository/supplement or something??? I've heard about it on fertilityfriend.com. You might want to ask your doctor about that.

Re: Low Progesterone

Flee they can give you progesterone suppositories and that will bring your levels back up. From what I understand it's NOT uncommon at all and many women have low progesterone. They need to monitor you to make sure your levels are good but thats a GOOD things because its shows they are on top of things. Dont worry Flee. That stupid nurse should have explained things better!!

Re: Low Progesterone

my SIL had this for both pregnancies. I think you need to take them until you hear the heartbeat (right near 12 weeks).

Thanks Kathy ..

I have heard in the past that it isn't uncommon to have low progesterone levels, I guess I am just annoyed because the nurse didn't give me the exact "number".. she said it wasn't "dangerously" low, just 'borderline' and the doctor just wanted to make sure it hit "normal" range. BUT in the same breath, the nurse kept harping on the fact that "well low progesterone isn't good anyhow, it will increase your chance of miscarriage" and that is just something you do NOT need to hear over the phone

AND I purely wanted to know was WHY this took so long to determine, I am already 10 weeks ... shouldn't I have been on the supplmeents sooner?

It just makes me worry about the baby and if its truly OK Chat Icon

Re: Low Progesterone

Don't freak! Please don't freak! It's VERY common... more common than you think and if you do some research you'll find that oftentimes Doctors/Nurses freak out a patient for no good reason because every doctor has a different "cut-off" for what's low. Generally, I've heard that anything below 15 is low and requires supplementation.

Hopefully this will make you feel better - I had a m/c and then I got pregnant one week later. As a precautionary measure my Dr. put me on progesterone supplements just in case that's what caused the first m/c, figuring that it wouldn't hurt the fetus if that's not what caused it. He prescribed the supplements right on the same day that I had my first blood draw (and oh boy, watch out, they intensify the pregnancy symptoms!). Turns out, the nurse called me and told my progesterone levels came back somewhat low, so they had me stay on the progesterone for the whole pregnancy. I think I was at 12 for my first blood draw, and then a week after being on the progesterone, my level spiked up to 50 and leveled out for the rest of the first trimester around 30. I went off the supplements at week 13, and now I'm at week 37, fat, happy and VERY ready to deliver. So, PLEASE don't worry... it's really quite common, and you can still have a VERY healthy, viable pregnancy Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

So the symptoms get WORSE huhChat Icon I already cannot eat anything !! Chat Icon (thanks for the warning!)

My doctor just called me and even she was surprised my levels were low.. in particular that I seem to have EVERY PREGGO symptom under the sun.. there was nothing to indicate that she thought my levels were low at all.. I have rampant Morning Sickness, the sorest boobs ever, so tired, the whole 9 yards. So even she was a bit suprirsed the levels came back low, and wants to do this as precautionary more than anything ..

Thanks to you all for the information and support!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Mine was borderline also and I asked to go on Prog. suppositories which was yucky but did the trick. I just stopped using them as I'm now in week 13. If you need to ask any questions please PM me. Gina Chat Icon
