No, the six weeks do not roll over come Sept. I had my son this August and had six weeks (if normal delivery, 8 if c-section) from that date...... I decided that was ridiculous and took a leave 'til Feb. I thought my school sec was wrong, but I called the uft and they confirmed it.

Big time! It's still hard for me to understand. The only pay I received in Sept was for the nine days I had in my CAR. Once your 6 weeks are up, you can't borrow days or take the 30-day grace period pay (where you get paid for weekends and hoildays only). This of course does not apply if you have a medical excuse.
ETA: The next time I get pregnant I will be sure to plan it so it is during the school year so I get my six weeks!!!

The thing that really su cks is that they only pay you for the 6/8 weeks if you have the days in your car.
I've only been working in NYC for 2 years, this is my 3rd, and last year when I was leaving work I was hit by a car right outside my school -- and was out for 2.5 weeks because of injuries related -- it was supposed to be a line of duty, union confirmed it, but my principal neglected to do anything with my paperwork once I handed it in -- we only found this out this year when I needed to go on maternity leave, and so I have negative 7 days in my bank and am only able to borrow 13 days. It stinks. I had my baby 10/6 and am only being paid through 10/24 but will be out until december. the union is grieving the whole line of duty thing but it won't help me now when i need the pay.
i hope our retroactive pay from the contract comes in november so at least i'll get that.
in canada i heard you get 1 year paid no matter where you work. i hate our system when it comes to maternity leave.

The six weeks still comes out of your CAR, which is ridiculous. So really you are not getting paid for maternity leave, you are using your own time. If you don't have the days in your CAR, you can borrow up to 20 days.
