Midwives
Okay so someone just told me I could have a midwive covered through insurance, is this true? Why would everyone then? Not exactly sure what they do but why not have an extra coach. Anyone have one? What do they do?

A midwife takes the place of your OB/GYN. They actually will deliver the baby etc. A Doula on the other hand is like a labor coach/support.

Yes, Midwives are trained medical professionals -- they deliver babies and can do everything a doctor can except surgery. I just switched to a midwifery practice.

My practice has a midwife + the 5 doctors. The midwife does 80-90% of the births. She did mine, and I LOVED her. She was there throughout the whole pushing stage, and if my baby wasn't born on a Sunday, she probably would have been there for more of the labor, but she has to have a "day off" every once in a while too. If there were any problems, there is also a doctor on call. I went with the midwife b/c then I knew who was going to deliver my ds (if I didn't, I would just have had the doctor on call), also she isn't as quick to cut - for an episimoty (sp?) or a c-section. I was SO happy with my decision. I'm in GA though....and I know different states have different laws.

There is a mid-wife at my OBGYN but when I was looking at the hospital information ( I will be delivering at South Nassau in Oceanside), apparently they do not allow mid-wives to deliver. Maybe it depends on the hospital. I am going to ask about this next time I go in for a visit.
