Only one, but he has family that watches the baby every weekend so he said he'll leave him with them. He didn't seem to think it was an issue and when I told him it would be an issue for me he just laughed it off and said I'll be able to find someone to watch Alex. But, really, I won't.

That is really a tough one. I would really sit down and talk to your DH. I think it would be in your best professional interest to attend this - and I am sure that over time your DH will understand.

From the company's standpoint, I can kinda see why they don't want children there - it would totally distract your reason for being there. I know anytime I went away on business, I was pretty much "on" 24/7 - it would never occur to me to bring a child. But they used the word "retreat" and not meeting or anything like that.
Did they discuss what type of activities are taking place?? It is strange to me that they are okay with spouses but not children.
Is the new company not family-friendly?? Are most of the people single??

I think it's just semantics because apparently there are meetings interspersed with the social activities. They say they are very family-friendly and considering the size, over 200 attorneys, there are quite a few people with families

honestly, I am more surprised that they said yes to spouses, than them saying no to children.
January is a long time away. A lot of things can change between now and then.

It seems that the firm would prefer you not bring DH (so he could watch your child) than bring your whole family.
I don't think children are ever invited to our partner retreats and firmwide functions, but, depending on the event, spouses are invited. I'm not surprised that the firm doesn't want children there. Since this is a new firm and you want to make a good impression, I think you either need to find someone to care for your daughter or have DH stay home and take care of her. I hope everything works out.
