Anyone know about the rush hour traffic on the Throgs Neck /GW ? Need opinions
Monday morning, we're heading for Hershey... (we're in Suffolk). My hubby very much prefers the Throgs Neck to the midtown tunnel or Triboro.
So we plan to take the Throgs Neck.
I say we leave at like 6am, he was thinking more like 10am / after rush hour....
Anyone think either is a better or worse idea?
(pick me pick me   )
I really hate leaving after rush hour because then youre day is shot. We'll get there by 4pm! between traffic, stopping for lunch, diaper change, etc...
I figured this is NY, we cant expect NO traffic anywhere these days...If we leave at 10am, Im sure we'll hit a 12noon lunch rush somewhere, and even if we leave at 6am, we'll be somewhere for the 8-9 rush...
and I would hope most traffic would be heading towards the city, we'd be going the other way on the GW.
Any suggestion?

Why not go over staten island and go over the outter bridge crossing, you would be much farther south.

Im taking any good ideas into consideration, thanks Karen  although the Verazzano can be a nightmare too... unless we get there early enough

your going to hit traffic at ANYTIME going over the GW!!
Take KPToys advice and go through Staten Island...it would be better if you are going to PA

I think that's the way to go. go to 1010wins and you can find a list of construction going on.
I hit a ton of traffic taking the throggs neck last week to go to the Bronx/Westchester, the whitestone bridge is down to 1 or 2 lanes - traffic is awful on the van wyke.
The triboro has never ending construction also.
I would try the Southern State/Belt/Verazzano/Outerbridge at 10 a.m.

K is right....take the cross island over to the belt and go thru staten island...to the outerbridge.....and if you want to beat traffic, you're going to have to leave earlier than 6am

We left @ 10:00 when we went to NH 2 weeks ago and it was great! The kids had breakfast and my baby took his niiiiiiiiice late morning nap on the way.

I used to take the Whitestone when I lived in Queens- would leave about 7. Both bridges in that area would be ok, but now there is major construction on the Whitestone (like, MAJOR!) and I am sure that adds lots of volume to the TN.
And traffic on the GW is very heavy to Jersey- now I take the Deegan down and always get slowed down when I pass the ramp for the bridge, and that's usually before 7.

I agree! The only time I encountered no traffic on the Cross Bronx Parkway was at 2am -- every other time it's a big ole mess. If DH insists on the GW I would leave earlier then 6.

I agree, I think 6am is a very bad time to leave. You either need to leave earlier, or wait a few hours.
I also second going through Staten Island. Throgs Neck is going to put you totally North - why does he want to go that way??

Hey! Are you trying to get over the 81? My sugesstion would be this:
Take the Verazanno to the Turnpike, but go NORTH to exit 14A - I-78 WEST toward Clinton. Take that all the way down to 81 SOUTH... About 6 or 7 miles later is the Hershey exit.

Thanks everyone!
I'll pass this info to my hubby. He's a creature of habit, thats why he has to be in his comfort zone, the throgs neck
But we're def taking everyone's advice here!  I knew I could count on you guys
