Did anyone need to obtain a permit for a fence?

Did anyone have to obtain a permit to put up a fence, if so was it hard to get approved? What we want goes 8' beyond the street and it is suppose to be 16' the fence guy said try to get a permit for it. So I was just wondering if anyone has done this??

thanks all!

I suppose it depends on where you live. We were OKd with a permit for ours but the variance to do something out of the normal rules is another story here. (We live in Massapequa Park) We want to bring our fence out another 12 feet and I am told they are real pains in the a*s about it here. And they want another $180 to file for a variance!

I live on a corner in the Town of Hempstead, so our fence can only be 4' high if you extend it past your house line or you have to get a permit. If we had kept the fence even with the house we could have made it 6', but we have a huge side yard that was just going to waste so we cut into that to make our backyard bigger.

We decided to go with the 4' fence and planted a line of arborvites along it inside our backyard, since there is no code for vegetation. That way we were within the law and we get the privacy we were looking for.

We needed a permit from our town to build our fence, it was not hard to get.

What DON'T you need a permit for??? You need to get permission for everything you do to your house that you pay a mortgage on and taxes on. It's crazy!!

It depends upon your town and the height of the fence. When I had a house in Town of Oyster Bay I could install a 5 foot fence w/o a permit but not a 6'.

I live in a the town of Riverhead and a permit is not needed. Actually, my fence is being installed today. If you wanted to do something that is not in code (have it taller or closer to the street), you may need to seek a variance. I would check with Code Enforcement or the Building Department for your town.
