UPDATE; ok sorry apparently my uncle got the story wrong umbertos wasnt hurt or damaged accordign to teh news on three channels. anyone knwo for sure???



my dh said his uncle called him who lives in Floral park and said an oil company down teh block had an explosion and umbertos and a whole row of stores went up. dont knwo if anyone is hurt.

Channel 7 said only 2 firefighters had minor injuries.

Construction workers hit a gas main that started a fire at 10am, one block of jericho tpke westbound still closed.

(1010 WINS) (NEW HYDE PARK, Long Island) A ruptured gas main sparked a fire in New Hyde Park, Long Island forcing the evacuation of a number of stores and apartments. Officials say workers digging on the sidewalk near Covert Avenue and Jericho Turnpike apparently hit a gas main around 10:30 this morning.

The explosion and fire didn't injure anyone seriously. But the New Hyde Park Animal Hospital along with a row of stores, including a dance studio, a deli, professional offices and a fuel oil company caught fire.

The animals were all evacuated safely, and some of the oil stored in trucks at the Nuzzi Fuel Oil Company burned sending thick black smoke through the area.

Nassau County Fire Marshals are investigating the cause of the fire.

Nuzzi Oil is 625 Jericho, Umberto's is 633, and the Animal Hospital is 615.....

I hope all the animals are safe!!!!!!!!!!

I just saw it on the news. It was a natural gas explosion. Workers working on sidewalk beautification hit the gas line. So sad,the Nuzzi bulding is gone. My family has been friends with them for years and that Nuzzi bulding that was destroyed, my granfather used to clean the place for them, he used to wax the floors, and when he got too old and couldn't do it anymore, my dad and brothers and I would go and clean it for him to keep money coming in for him. I'm so sad, that place was a huge part of my grandpas life when he was alive!!

my cousin said someone hit a main gas line and it exploded. she works in new hyde park and they had to evacuate her building...

My FH works right down Covert Ave - he heard lots of fire engines, but that's about it.

If Umberto's is gone, or even temporarily out of service, FH will be saving a LOT of money on lunches...
