Anyone lived in/familiar with "Women's residences" in NYC?
DH's young cousin (junior/senior year in college) is coming to NYC for the fall semester (short term just a few months) for an internship, and her mother has asked for our input on housing for her. She wants to get the full "NYC experience" so will be living in Manhattan.
She is already checking craigslist, but her mom would like something safe, so we suggested one of the old "women's hotels" or "women's residences" to live in.
She has come up with 2 places...The Webster Apartments (34th bw 9th and 10th) and The Markle Residences (West 13th st)...both for women only...one is run by the Salvation Army.
2 questions: 1. Is anyone familiar with/lived in one of these that could give a recommendation...either positive or negative. 2. Could anyone suggest another similar place in Manhattan which provides safe housing for women? Finding listings via the web seems next to impossible, am sure its for safety reasons that they are not publicized too much.
Thanks in advance!

I knew someone who lived in one on the upper west side and loved it, it was run by nuns.
Also, I work in affordable housing and if she is a part-time student, full time we can't provide low cost housing for, I can get her into one of our buildings. They are all 24 hour security, studio apartments.

She might want to check out Student Housing . They provide housing for students in this situation and for colleges in the area.

My friends Kip and Henry used to live in one of these. It was a great situation for them, they really loved it. The only downside is that they had to dress like ladies to get in and out. They got up to all sorts of japes and hijinks when they lived there, it was a laugh riot. They worked in Advertising, which was a wacky job, so they enjoyed the whole cross dressing thing.
Mind you, this was the "everything goes" eighties!!!

My old roomate did that - she lived in one near Irving & 10th Street I think although I don't know the name, but it worked out well for her..

Re: Anyone lived in/familiar with "Women's residences" in NYC?
I know someone at work who lives at the one on 9th avenue. I've gone there during lunch for the walk and she has gone there to pick something she has forgotten to bring to work. It's pretty safe and nice. If you live there and you are bringing a guest, the guest has to sign in and out. A guest can stay overnight as well in a room but has to pay and it's not really a lot. We always joke around when we all go out if we need a place to sleep overnight instead of heading back to the island, we can stay there for a cheaper price. They have someone making sure only those that live there can come in. My friend said they charged you according to how much $$ you make a year. Many students from within the USA or internationally come here to board while they go to school. It's for Women only. They have another in the 50's I believe. And they usually don't publicize on it because of safety for these women. In the event that any woman might need board/room (domestic abuse women for example) and they want to protect them. It's also as a way for women who may not have an income and want to get out of any situation to have an option. They also have a cafeteria and you pay for two meals and the third one is free. It's pretty peaceful in there. My acquaintance ended up living there because the apartment she was living in the city was put up for sale..she was unable to buy so in a rush someone told her about this place. They said you can live there maximum for 5 years but now that she's been there for awhile, you can live there for longer. It is supposed to be a temporary location for women but she works within blocks and love this place. She's thinking she's probably going to stay there a little longer. Webster Apartments (212) 967-9000 419 W 34th St New York, NY I searched their website...here it is.... http://www.websterapartments.org/about.htm
