Re: spinoff: Haggling car prices?

Get the invoice price. www.edmunds.com is great for finding out. Haggle on the invoice price...sticker means nothing.

Good luck!! Chat Icon

Re: spinoff: Haggling car prices?

anyone can do this actually...you have to be willing to get up and leave the dealership if you don't get what you want.

When you sit down with them YOU tell THEM what price you can afford monthly and you tell them if they get you to that price, you'll buy the car.....not a penny more.

If they don't, get up and leave.....in a few days or a week, they'll be calling you with your price saying the price was just lowered.

We had a friend who sold us our Tahoe, we ended up paying LESS than what the DEALERSHIP paid for it. He cut himself out of the deal so his comission was the $100 he makes as a minimum for selling a vehicle, then we got 2 coupons that brought us to $1,000 UNDER invoice. We also got 0% financing

Re: spinoff: Haggling car prices?

We just went through this. Edmunds.com has TONS on info on buying cars. Carsdirect.com has invoice prices too and somehow they can underprice the invoice price and I think you just go in to a dealership to pay and pick it up.

We looked at AAA pricing, and are buying through one of those dealerships. There is a preset price that the dealership agrees to with AAA - a certain amount above invoice in our case - and that's the price, with no haggling.

I HAVE to forward this to my DH. He's a car salesman and always is the one to say...SEE YA! Most of the time it's the customer coming back begging.

He does have guys at the dealership that do that though. They don't care about making money they just want to push cars.

My DH says it's the commission that puts the food on our table. Most of the times these guys are not making a salary. The ONLY people he will cut good deals for his friends and family.

Chat Icon I guess you have to go to the "larger" dealerships...but yes, be ready to walk away...I think that's a general negotiating rule for everything.

I haggle, I never accept the first offer. when we bought DHs truck last summer, I got the monthly payment down a few hudred less then they offered and we didnt have to change the model we wanted or put more money down. Same when I got my car. I haggle all day for a living. You have to be ready to walk away and remember they need you, they have a lot of room they just choose to see who they can sucker in.

I met a guy one day who ended up buying a car from another dealership because DH wouldn't budge on his price. I went home and kicked him around a bit Chat Icon and then he said for every person that walks out...another comes in his place that will support our family.

that is true! but you can negotiate, some people wont or do not know how. it is all a matter of what you want to do. my parents have the same truck as we do, they put more down and pay more. My dad wont "haggle"

True true. DH says if they don't ask...they won't get. Some people just take the number and go.

I left 6 dealerships until I found one (Smithtown Nissan) that was willing to meet my price. I did have the advantage of time. I waited until fall when next year's model was coming out.

How did it go Azad? I agree getting the invoice price is the first thing to do.

Re: spinoff: Haggling car prices?

When I bought my car, I first went to consumer reports and got all the information. Then I went around to different Volkswagen dealerships. In the end, one dealer met the price I wanted. I also had the luxury of waiting since my old car still had a little more life in it.
We definitely haggled and got a good price.

Azad,

How did it go? Did you buy?

Re: spinoff: Haggling car prices?

Edmunds.com is the first place I would go to get the invoice price on a car. Even if you are planning on leasing, it will be based on the total price of the car. BTW-only put tax and first payment up front if you are leasing. Bank fees can be negotiated.

NEVER negotiate on monthly payments. You can do the math yourself after you figure out what is a reasonable price for the car. When the salesman asks you what your monthly payment is now or what do you want it to be, just say I'm not sure.

The invoice price listed on Edmunds.com does not take into account dealer incentives. If they need to move inventory there will be lots of incentives for you.

If you have a trade in don't tell them until after you have negotiated the price you want.

As far as optional equipment, decide ahead of time what you definitely want in the car. Maybe a CD changer, auto start..etc..but don't even negotiate that until you are in final stages with the negotiation..you will be able to get these things at cost the later you wait.

Go to at least 2 dealerships and put one against the other. These dealerships get incentives based on volume sometimes and may be able to offer better pricing if they know you are shopping.

Lastly as others have said, if you don't feel comfortable with how things are going, leave. It's not the end of the world, there will be the perfect deal out there for you.

Good luck and get em!
