Racoons getting into my garbage cans...

These little buggers have been getting into our garbage almost every night this week!
We have the locking lids, but the're too smart even for those.
Any recommendations on what I can do to keep them away?

have you tried bungee cords??

We used to have a super bad racoon problem... i remember one night in the dead middle of the winter, my step dad sat outside in the car in the dark with the windows open with a beebee gun ready to shoot the damn things! He was soo fed up with them!

i have had the same problems with racoons, and i found that pouring bleach (regular clorox) in your garbage pail and a little on the outside of the lid keeps them away. I really didnt wanna dump like half my clorox bottle literally in the garbage, but i figured it was worth a try and it works like a charm. I guess the taste or smell of it sends them running... try it, and let me know!

Andrea we have the same problem! No matter what we do, the racoons get at the garbage. We put BRICKS on tops of the pails and still they get in there!

Cheryl how do the bungee cords work? Bleach scares me a bit, I wouldn't want to poison them.Chat Icon

Metal garbage cans. They are not the prettiest things, but they cannot chew through it.

Thanks for all the ideas.
I'm leaning towards the bungee cords, b/c the racoons seem to tip over the cans, so I need something that will keep the lids on.
They would just knock the bricks right over!
The little stinkers are pretty smart!Chat Icon

My IL's had a problem and they bought a humane high pitched sensor to keep them away. It worked! I think they bought the sensor at Home Depot.
