Help!! They just started to paint in my office!!!
I'm only 5 weeks.. but the fumes are out of control!! what should i do?? I haven't told anyone in my office yet that I'm preggo. I'm getting scared.

Can you go home sick? There's a stomach virus going around, so you can use that as your excuse tomorrow too. Maybe by Monday the fumes won't be as bad.

Let them know that you are feeling sick and that it would be best if you went home. Call in sick tomorrow if you can.
By monday the fumes should be a lot better.

I don't know that I'd call HR if you aren't ready for your manager to find out. In my experience HR tells management these kinds of things as soon as they know about them.

If you can't call in sick. I would tell HR and my boss the fumes are making me dizzy, lightheaded and nauseaus and can't concentrate on my work. because of OSHA they have to make accommodations for you.

That's totally unsafe for fumes to be in the office during work hours period.
I would definitely speak w/HR - are other's complaining also?
If I were you, I would go home and tell them you aren't feeling well or have to handle a last-minute errand.

I would just complain about the fumes- say they are making you dizzy and you don't feel well and are going home. You don't need to tell them you are pregnant. call in sick tomorrow.

You can tell HR. They are supposed to keep it confidential - supposed to. I would if you told me, as an HR person. If they don't, that's a breach of confidentiality!

I agree. They definitely shouldn't be painting while people are working anyway! Do they at least have windows open or something? Maybe they'll let you move near an open window?

I don't know what duty of confidentiality has to you HR has to you, the employee, vs. the company. HR works for the company- not the employee.

They painted my building twice during my pregnancy...
I had told the DR. and he said it was fine as long as some windows were open, and as long as I didnt feel faint because of it!

thanks everyone- we don't have open windows so they had to shut the doors of the offices they were painting so that lessened the fumes a bit.
But it's still ridiculous to be doing this during working hours!!!

Plus having managed staff at a Fortune 500 company in the past, my experience was that HR did not keep this confidential, they were more concerned with making sure that the department would not suffer while someone was out on FMLA. But maybe I was dealing with an HR person who didn't know what they should have done.

well if she came to me, i would have kept it confidential...and in my eyes, my duty is to the people....which is why maybe HR makes me so miserable sometimes! LOL

Cheryl, what did you wind up doing?
I ended up sticking it out. The fumes lessened after they closed the doors of the offices they were painting. I left a bit early as well. I hope they don't start up today!
