out of curiosity...
do you think its appropriate to bring a 9 or 10 yr old boy into the women's room?
quite honestly, i think i would be fine with my husband taking our daughter into the men's room if it was absolutely necessary. sure, it might turn some heads, but who knows what the situation is like. maybe she didnt feel comfortable by herself.
for all we know, the girl who went into the men's room with her father could have had a disability and needed help.
just my opinion!

Yes I do- we go in private stalls! the boy will see nothing but woman washing their hands, fixing their hair or makeup- nothing SEXUAL about it at all- Nothing exposed!
edited to say if she was disabled or needed help Id rather see her brother help her and walk her into and use the ladies room.

I wonder if all the poor children that get abducted or raped in public restrooms had known what to do if a stranger approached them.. chances are most did, but lets face it.. we live in a world where there are LOTS of sick ppl that PREY on children.. and a 10 year old in a restroom by themselves EVEN with the parents outside is EXCATLEY the opportunity they are looking for...
Maybe the father had gone in first and made sure nobody was there before he brought her in.. maybe there was an area that she stood in with her back to the urinals.. I doubt any father of a 10 year old girl would let her stand by the urinals and watch men pee..I would bet anything she was put off to the side and was told to turn around....
I think he did the right thing

like i said in my earlier post its not ideal and i think i would have to be in that situation. i know this sounds silly but it also would depend on the kid. Some kids are more street smart than others and also i teach sixth graders and some look 8 while others look 16 and thay are all really between 10-11 so if my kids looked really young and vulnerable i might be more likey to take him in the womens room or have dh take her in to te mens room.
And as far as the man holding it in he is an adult so you really think leaving a kid in a locked car in a parking lot of a diner is safe???

i Understand what you're saying BUT what if it was the DAD that needed to use the bathroom... Not the daughter.. and he didnt want to leave the kids standing outside the mens room UNattended??

i agree with that, but i will point out that you see nothing in a men's room either
there are stalls and there are urinals. Guys stand against the urinal and pee...you don't see anything. And you zip up before you walk away

Regardless of what *I* would do in that situation, I would 100% understand a parent doing either (bringing her in or leaving her outside) I don't think either scenario is soo absurd that it would ake me appaled.

I just asked DH what he would do, and he said, "What would I be doing in a mall with our future daughter? That's your job." 
He also said he'd let her go alone but he would wait near the door.
I think for me, it's not a question of a ten year old being old enough to go alone (of course she is) but it is a different world and you have to be a lot more careful. I don't really know what I'd want him to do.
I have seen a few places that have designated "family" bathrooms. In a situation like a man at a mall with his daughter, that would be the ideal.

how many times do you see parents run into a store real quick to pick up meds from the pharmacy or get milk from the farm, give me a break, you see it all the time- 5 minutes? so life threatening, what about when you get gas? and your pumping the kid is in the car arent they while you are inside waiting on line to pay for the gas if you use cash?

Yes at 10 yrs old, she can listen to the radio, Id rather have that than have her wisked into a mens room to have her "maybe" see what I dont feel at that age she should be seeing, definately! I think a 10 yr old is old enough to know to not unlock the door for strangers- no difference than opening the front door-

I try not to get involved in these things when they start to escalate, but leaving a kid in the car is crazy. Don't you remember two years ago when a ten year old was left in the car at the bagel store, put it in drive and the car ran into the store.
Or, the FOUR year old who was left in the car and also threw the car into drive and drove it into someone's house.
Children should NEVER be left in cars by themselves, you just don't know what can happen in five to ten minutes.
And when was the last time you went into CVS and got your prescription and paid for it in less than ten minutes!?
