Never stayed in a hotel there, other than the Hyatt Regency downtown, we went for a wedding and got a room. It was really nice.
But I think it is better if you stay near Dale Mabry or the Courtney Campbell causeway. Many more restaurants and things to do.

As far as chain restaurants..DH use to work at Hops, which we love. Melting Pot is also there.

We just stayed in Tampa for a 4 day weekend in Feb. It was wonderful!

We stayed at a hotel right on the bay - called Sailport Resorts. It was pretty good. We had a really nice room...top floor (there are only 4...) with a beautiful view. If you book there, definitely try to specify what room (not sure if you can do this...we just lucked out) - the best views are 4th floor - about room 425-433 (odd only - even rooms are on the other side of the hall way not overlooking the bay).

It has a kitchen full w/ stove and fridge, so that was convenient. It is located slightly west of Tampa downtown, but it is a good spot, easy to get to downtown.
