ahh, the fun of shopping for a mortgage!!
We applied for preapproval from Bank of America and HSBC. I think we are also going to try Wamu and Greenpoint and then pick the best one. I figure, the banks that don't charge for preapproval, we should get as many as we can, right? I wanted to try Chase, but they charge like $400 for preapproval and with all the banks that do it for free, I don't want to pay, you know? I hate this part!!!!

Why don't you use a morgtage broker? They can get you the best rate.

We first looked at HSBC...their rates were high though. DH works for Morgan Stanley - so we ended up gonig with them. We didn't shop around though.

If you need another suggestion, Coldwell Banker was pretty easy to work with & get a pre-approval over the phone.

Why are you getting preapprovals from multiple banks? It doesn't seem necessary.
1. It could affect your credit score if they are running your credit multiple times.
2. Preapprovals don't have anything to do with the rate you will get. All they mean is that the bank will give you a mortgage.
3. If one bank will give you a mortgage, all the banks will.
Just wanted to let you know so you don't mess up your credit score.
(DH works for Wamu, and I confirmed this info with him before posting).

I agree with this. For the preapproval, I just used my regular bank. After that I looked around, and it turned out that my regular bank had the best rates - plus they gave me a ton of benefits on my regular accounts since the mortgage pushes you into a higher bracket with them.
