Breastfeeding Class - mini review

So, DH and I went to a BF class last night. It was 3 1/2 hour long Chat Icon . It was OK. I wish it was a little more informative as far as the best things to eat and how to wean and stuff like that. She didn't even TOUCH those subjects.

She was very informative about how to get the baby to latch and products that will help the most, how to establish a good feeding pattern and stuff like that. I just feel that for 3 and a half hours, I would have rather her give more information. People were aslking lots of infant care questions and she was answering them. I would have signed up for the infant care class if I wanted that information.

Also, she kept throwing in a bunch of digs about formula feeding. DH and I were a little turned off by that. As most of you know, we are not 100% sure about breastfeeding (for personal reasons). We didn't take the class to hear an anti-formula campaign OR to hear a pro-breastfeeding campaign. I simply wanted more information on how to successfully BF my baby should I choose to do so. But that's JMO.

Over all, it was worth the $25 per person. Lots of the tips that she gave as far as establishing a pattern, releiving gas, etc., were very helpful even if you decide to formula feed.

The class I took was at Roosevelt hospital in NYC.

I'm going to the class at Stony Brook hospital next week. I would be totally annoyed if people kept asking off-topic infant care questions, too. The Stony Brook class is free, so we'll see how it goes.

I hear lots of comments like that- the lactation specialists are like breast feeding natzis. If you're not BFing they tend to look down upon you and make you feel like sh!t.

It's funny you say that...breastfeeding nazis...that's what Mike called her! Chat Icon

She also said that you should never pump...or almost never pump. Only if you are going back to work. And if that is the case, you should have the child care provider bring the child to you as often as possible. Come on now. How many of us can really do that!?!? So, some of the points she was making were really impractical.

I love when people think they know what's best for you and your baby. I'm sure if I mention to a BF natzi that I'm going back to work after two weeks and will need to rely almost exclusively on pumping they'll have a fit. Chat Icon Bite me lady!

It's too bad that you didn't get more out of it. I'm taking my class a week from Saturday. I'll let you know if I get more info out of it. I'm hoping to learn alot because I am completely clueless on the subject.

That's what really annoys me about the "over the top" breast feeding advocates. I do want to try BF and I hope it works, but I don't want people preaching to me about how bad the alternatives are. It's a personal decision. they need to respect that.

Re: Breastfeeding Class - mini review

I took a breastfeeding class at my hospital with DH. it was also about 3 hours. We got so much out of it and she told us that to keep your supply up, you sometimes would HAVE to pump.
interesting how different some LC can be!

Re: Breastfeeding Class - mini review

I am taking mine 1st Monday in November at Beth Israel in NYC...
I met the woman that teaches it- she was REALLY cool- basically saying how no wonder why women don't BF with the complete lack of support we get here in terms of maternity leave, etc....

Re: Breastfeeding Class - mini review

I took one here in CA and she was so supportive- letting us know that its not for everyone and sometimes for various reasons people decide not to do it and not to feel guilty. She did give us lots of support and places to go for help before we gave up. I guess it really depends on the Lactation Specialist.

that sounds so ridiculous..and
completely impractical as well as obsurd to have a child care provider run around with your child all day....its silly.
