i was wondering and just wondering how much time/attention has to be given to your pet for a person to be considered a good pet owner?

I remember speaking to one of the volunteers at Save-A-Pet when I was looking to adopt. I was very nervous about leaving this poor dog alone for 8-9 hours because of work. She replied that even if it's an hour that we spend together, it's better then being at a shelter. It doesn't matter if you don't have all the time in the world to devote to your pet, they don't care...they just want what you CAN give them. They aren't picky and aren't demanding.

Not if it's an adult dog you are looking into adopting. A good adoption center will work to find the right fit for you.

When someone is saying they don't have enough time for their dog, to me what it really means is they don't want the dog... Maybe they do have an hour to spend & while some of you may think that is enough... these people have already given up.
I could never imagine getting rid of my dog. Even if I had no time, I would find a way to keep him with me and keep him happy, because he is part of my family.
That said, I would rather see a dog that is not wanted go to another home then be neglicted, starved to death, beaten, left on the streets, etc.

Not if it's an adult dog you are looking into adopting. A good adoption center will work to find the right fit for you.

I used to feel guilty about leaving Emmie and Chloe all day.
Then, I was on disability for a surgery that I had and it was as if Emmie was so annoyed that I was home all day for 8 weeks. She would get testy and annoyed with me for no reason. it was like I was interrupting her time alone. When I went back to work, she went back to her old self.
So, I come home around 6:30 and spend as much time with them as they want. I guess that's enough for them because they are both such good pets!

Misty doesn't necessarily need a specific amount of time, but she does need to have us around for a few hours a day(besides sleep). I do take her on hour long walks in the morning and play with her - so I guess we get an hour of quality time in a day.

I was curious because i feel extremely guilty leaving to work. I wake up earlier then needed so i can take a long walk. My DH leaves to work later than me (noon) so hangs out with the dog and i come home at 6:30 and hang out until i go to sleep.

I think it depends on 2 things. 1- the dog. for example my Shiba Inu requires a lot more attention than my Chihuahua, even though the Chihuahua is a baby still. It is just the breed.
2- what they are used to, If the dog is used to running a marathon once a week, they will, for a while anyway, try to find another outlet for that energy if they are no longer running a marathon once a week.
I also think that as long as a dog is well fed, taken to the vet on a regular basis (not just yearly for shots) and is well exercised then they are ok. I do think, however, that including them in daily family activities is the biggest difference. I hate going to people's houses and from the minute you walk in they down-talk the dog, they ***** & moan about the dig, and it is apparent to everyone (including the dog) that they are a nuisance and not a beloved pet. That kills me.

I definitely agree with this! I think making sure the dog is healthy, given plenty of food, water and walks is most important.
I also do agree it depends on the dog. We adopted our dog at 1.5 years and I think he was used to being "neglected" in his old home, though it could just be his personality. He doesn't really like playing with us, he prefers to play on his own but he's very good at entertaining himself so I don't mind. But, what I do try to do for him is take him on walks besides his normal routine because he LOVES them, and we also take him with us to a lot of places (our family and friends houses), the beach and dog runs on the weekends.
Being in a home where they can get the basics they need plus the love they need is all that matters.

We felt really guilty leaving Rudy all day in the crate.. so my DH goes home everyday during his lunch and takes him out... Also he isn't in the crate anymore but on the bed with the AC on..  When my DH goes home to check on him he is always fast asleep and doesn't even want to get up. Then after the walk he goes right back to the bed.. what a life!
When I get home I either walk him or we take him for a run (maybe two to three times a week). Now that we are getting a house he will have his own backyard to run in every night. We are all very excited.
Even if we can't run/walk him if I just sit on the couch with him from 6-9 he is happy.. he just wants some love and kisses and that is all he requires and to me he is worth every minute I spend with him.

I definitely see where the poster was coming from, but you make adjustments.
For instance, after I had Ali, Casey knows things are different and you can even see Casey has more patience when it comes to time to go out and playtime outside. Many times when time is up outside I will say to Casey - ok time to get Ali and she runs to the back door and into Ali's bedroom.
But then again, it may depend on the breed. I know when I was pregnant, it was definitely a concern of mine that will Casey get jealous of all the time we spend with the baby and not her. Plus you have to remember I am home all day with Casey since we got her, so it was an adjustment for her.
We make time for Casey, we bring the baby outside with us and play.
