rescheduled court date......8 years later?????
Can someone please explain to me how I have to appear in court today for a traffic ticket from 1998?????
Apparently, I must have postponed the original date and recently received something in the mail saying that my date originally scheduled for 5/1999 was rescheduled for today...2006!!!!!
How is this possible? Isn't there a time limit/statute of limitations involved here? Any lawyers??
This is probably THE most rediculous thing I've ever had to deal with!
Just really annoying

I'm not a lawyer, but statutes of limitations would limit the time you have to file a case, not limit the amount of time the court gets around to dealing with it. That's definitely a PITA but on the bright side, it will probably get tossed out when the date finally comes. The cop who wrote the ticket could be transferred, retired, etc. and I don't think anyone will remember giving a ticket 8 years ago.

I would say you have a right to a fair and SPEEDY trial- I bet they throw it out

Same thing just happened to DH - is it in Nassau? We had to go on a Saturday and everyone there had tickets from like 5 or 6 years ago. It almost seems as if someone just "found" all of these tickets. all they want is their $$$ - they will likely knock it down so you just have to pay a fine. That is what was happening to everyone when we were there.

Someone takes their job too seriously!
Perhaps you can ask them for 8 years more to pay the ticket?

THis happened to DH.
The thing that stinks is that insurance charges from date of conviction, not date of offense. So, those tickets will go on your record NOW.
We have a little higher premium because of a speeding ticket he got in 1997 that was just settled in 2004.

Same thing just happened to DH too - tickets on the Meadowbrook from Decemeber 1999. He had to appear and pay fines.

I got a speeding ticket on Northern State in early 2004 and I'm still waiting for my court date. I guess I have another 6 years to relax!!

This is a right that criminal defendants have, not someone who receives a ticket for a traffic violation.
