So we went to the GI today...

and it was quite a disappointing experience. They basically told us that she is not gaining enough weight, but sorry, there's nothign we can do for you. She's not keeping her formula down lately and she is writhing in pain half the day, but he wouldn't switch her meds and he wouldn't up her dose. All he told me was to give her 3-4 doses of Maalox a day. I'm sorry, but it is NOT safe for a baby to have that much antacid everyday. Even I know that and I'm not a doctor. I'm just so disgusted. I didn't make the appointment so that you could tell me that it's something she'll grow out of and has to live with for now.Chat Icon

Awww Rachel..I am sorry! Doctors are such jerks sometimes..mine told me that Megan just has to push due to her constipation. I am worried about hernias and the like and he said oh well basically. Oh well?? Its not normal! Can you take her to a different specialist maybe? You are her mommy and you know your daughter best..I agree with you..maalox for a baby all those times a day cannot be the answer! My doctor told me to give Megan a rectal thermometer when she couldnt poop..so I have to do this to my poor baby all the time?? Those arent answers! Im me if you wanna talk! Chat Icon

My boss' son has some major food allergies and digestive problems. Same situation as you, he was allergic to even mom's breastmilk and that is very unusual. I will see if I can get information on the doctors he has used.

Oh Rach I know how frustrated you are because we went through the same thing. I have to say we did give Miranda Mylants 3-4 times a day on many days when it was really bad. Why won't they try her on Prilosec or Prevacid?
I know it's not an answer but I will promise you that they do grow out of it but it is misery going through it. Miranda was never gaining enough weight and probably still isn't but she is so healthy and active that it doesn't seem to have made a bit of difference.
If they won't reevaluate her meds at all I would defintiely try for a second opinion. She shouldn't have to suffer all the time. Prevacid made a really good difference for us. Chat Icon

I really hope that your second opinion doctor is able to give you more answers and I am sorry you have to go through this. My niece has had a lot of problems with reflux so I can kinda understand how difficult this must be!

I would keep going to another doctor until you find one that can help you. It stinks that they cant give you a better answer or even suggestions to help her.

Go to Dr Chawla at Stonybrook she is the best and treated both my daghters and while Reese was in the NICU for 2 months she treated her at the hospital. Try enfamil AR..maybe that will help. or give some Rice or Oatmeal Cereal before the meal. Your the mom so try diferent things to see what works. A lot of times i tried things on my own. Good Luck

I'm not on LI. Our ped actually put her on Prilosec and the Prevacid before we even got in to see the GI and it made a world of difference in her pain. Nothing ever helped the spitting up. It just became a part of life.

Are your peds not willing to try Prilosec or Prevacid?

Re: So we went to the GI today...

Bryan had the same exact problem- they too did not change his meds and they also rec. maalox- I never gave it to him. Eventually he outgrew the relux and milk allergy and now he is in the 90th percentile for weight! He dropped from the 95th to 25th when he had issues from around 2 months to 7 months then he started gaining and gaining and has not stopped since- no he's a little chub a wub- it got so much better for him, I bet the same will happen for your DD.Chat Icon

Re: So we went to the GI today...

Hi girls. We went to the ped. today. I have to say, I have not met a dr. yet who is willing to put Ava on Prilosec or Prevacid. They will only give Zantac (which she is on at .7ml 3x a day and it's doing nothing), Axid or some other form of those types of meds. They are proven to be pretty ineffective since babies can gain a tolerance from them very quickly, which is what I think is happening to Ava. I know nothing will stop the spitting up, but the acid refluxing into her esophogus is making her so uncomfortable.

Anyway, my ped. agreed that I should not be giving her Maalox on a daily basis. He also told me that I should not concern myself with her weight gain or percentiles or charts because every baby grows differently. She gained 18oz. last month and he said that is perfectly fine and she'll gain more than that when the time comes. He wants me to try giving her some water inbetween feedings to dilute the acid in her stomache. He also suggested starting her on cereal now. So, we're going to take his advice because he's been dealing with babies for a lot longer than that GI has probably been alive. He upped her dose of Zantac to .8ml, but said no more than that because it's the max dose. He would like to try as many non-medicinal ways of easing her discomfort as we can, and I guess I can understand that. Constantly medicating her cannot be good for her. So wish us luck because tomorrow we start cereal and water!
