Running with scissors-one effed up book!
My MIL gave it to me b/c I needed something new and she hadn't read it yet...now I am debating giving it back  The writing is awesome-hysterical in fact, but the STORY is completely twisted and f&*(^ed up!!!

They are making it into a movie, which is due to be released soon. The family in the book (the psychiatrist's family) were suing Augusten because they said it portrayed them incorrectly and very negatively. I don't think it ended up being all lies, and I think Augusten said some parts were embellished, but the main story was true.
It is pretty screwed up, but after reading his other books, I tend to believe that most of it is true. The Christmas tree thing freaked me out immensely

I haven't gotten to that part yet. Oy, if THAT'S the part that freaked you out, I have no idea what I'm in for, considering how many other parts of the book I was freaked out by so far.

No, actually, the Christmas tree thing wasn't really disturbing, it was just one of the funniest, most bizarre things I can imagine living with.
The book was like a bad car accident, disturbing and strange, but I couldn't put it down. It makes you wonder what it would be like walking a mile in some stranger's shoes

I had the same reaction--disturbing but funny--a total train wreck.
Now, why isn't AB getting sh1t for embelishing his memoir the million little pieces guy (blanking on his name right now) got crucified?

I read the article online a while ago, but I think he just embellished slightly, and it was small things. James Frey seemed to make up a lot of the book, including characters who are now supposedly dead.
I also think the family only came forward with Running With Scissors when talk of the movie started, but I might have my facts a little mixed up.

Quite a few times, when things got especialy disturbing and gross, I was very tempted to put it down and never open again but made it through never the less. I am glad i did though. It was certainly very different form what I normaly read.
I heard that Annette Bening is cast as the main character's mother. I think she will be great in that role!

Finished it last night. Overall, a good book. He is certainly a great writer and I like how he updated everyone's whereabouts. Just crazy, nonetheless.

I loved this book; I just finished it over the weekend. I can't wait to start Dry.
Definitely a messed up story/childhood. Made me extremely grateful for mine!
