to move 70 miles north east of where I live now in va my salary would have to go up $15,000... 
It would only go up $9,000.

Deb is it me or is Virginia getting more expensive by the minute?? Of course it's a lot easier than NY, but I feel like the cost of living & housing is going up.

YES! the average housing cost in the DC area is $650,000.
New houses going up by me in no mans land are starting at $400k. THERE'S NOTHING HERE! We have a walmart and that's it.
I think richmond is still pretty reasonable though.

I've heard that N. Va. is almost comparable to NY in terms of real estate. 
DH is from Milwaukee and I want to cry when I think about how much less we'd have to make. And it actually is really, really nice there. But the two drawbacks: far from our families (his folks relocated to PA) and COLD COLD COLD in the winter. I can barely deal with NY winters!

I think richmond is still pretty reasonable though.
We're moving to Chesterfield and that's in the Richmond area. The houses are still affordable but the same houses that were 180k last year are in the 200's now. It's nutty, but we will make the move wheile we still can.
