picking an OB
I went to my health insurance website, and I got all the doctors associate with the hospital that I want to deliver at and that are in the high-risk OBGYN category. I called to make an appointment and they told me I need to have a regular doctor also because they don't deliver. If they don't deliver....what do they do? I was kinda shocked by the reposnse and just said, oh ok, I'll call back....but now I don't know what they meant?
Anyone know?

I just checked with my SIL and she told me her high risk OB is the who is delivering her.

Many gynocologists don't do deilveries anymore. They are gynocologists, but not obstetricians. They may treat women until the delivery and have someone esle do the delivery. I would chose a doctor who does it all.

They also might be something called a perintologist. I don't know exactly what they are but some OB's will send you to them to watch for high risk issues, but your OB will deliver you.

i see my OB/GYN and he'll be the one that will actually deliver the baby. however, he sent me (from day one) to the high risk doctor (due to my diabetes and whatnot) that he associates with. my high risk doctor though will not be present when i deliver and does not deliver any babies. he is strictly a specialist that deals with you throughout your pregnancy. however both him and my regular OB/GYN are affiliated with the hospital we'll deliver at. maybe thats what they meant? my high risk doctor is in maternal fetal medicine. he watches me like a hawk, but i think you need to be referred to him by your actual OB/GYN which is probably what they tried to explain. if you would like any info on either of my doctors, I highly recommend both!

Thanks ladies...I think I got it resolved. I had DH calling around today  (I'll take advantage of all the things he wants to do for me while it lasts).
A friend of mine recommended her OBGYN, and it turns out that they are also a high-risk group, although it doesn't state that on the insurance website. Just waiting for a callback to see when I can get an appointment.

I think this is exactly the scenario. But...I don't have a regular OBGYN, so that's why I was confused. Thanks for the clarification.

I have a wonderful ob/gyn who is also high risk the office has an excellent rep - they are in great neck. I can give you the office information if you are interested. The office is affliated with North Shore University Hospital Manhasset.

Turns out, they are not a high-risk group...back to the drawing board 
I am in NJ, so although I appreciate everyone's recommendations, they won't help me.

A perinatologist is a doctor who is used sort of for consultation and to follow problem pregnancies, but on the referral of a regular OB/GYN. I went to one of these doctors at around 17 weeks (my doc wanted me to have a consult with them because of a genetic liver problem I have). The office would not see me unless I had a regular OB and was referred by him. They told me the same thing -- that they work WITH your regular doc. They would have taken me as a regular patient (not a consultation) if my regular OB requested it and wanted to hand off my care to them. Otherwise, they did not do regular pregnancies and deliveries.

I'm new on here..and not pregnant yet, but have a question, did anyone go to a perinatologist before they became pregnant?
If I do become pregnant it would be considered a high risk pregnancy. Although my regular Ob/gyn tells me to come see him first. I am a little nervous to TTC and wonder if it would it be good idea to see a perinatologist?
For anyone that has been to one do they do more special tests or are they more like a high risk doctor?

Did you see him before you became pregnant? Would you recommend him as a good person to talk to? I am looking for one and would like to use one with a good recommendation. I am from Suffolk but would travel.
btw...You have such a cute baby and what a great picture of the sonogram!! So clear!!
