Houses with cedar shakes....

Ours are really old and need to be cleaned, stained/painted, a few need to be replaced...would you redo with the immitation cedar shingles and vinyl or would you give them some TLC and have them stained/painted?

If they are looking pretty crappy now I would probably replace with new THEN paint them or replace with vinyl. Are they leaking? You dont want to waste $3000 having your house painted only to have to reside in 2-3 years from now... KWIM.

Re: Houses with cedar shakes....

Our hi-ranch is cedar shakes and the ones in the front of the house got a lot of sun exposure and looked pretty worn and beat up, where as the ones in the back were fine, just needed to be given some TLC.

DH bought a box of the cedar shakes at Home Depot and replaced any shingles that were beyond repair. He nailed others in and did a lot of general maintenance. And then he bought stain and stained them the same color and I can't tell you how amazing it looks. What a difference.

We went this route for now because it was a lot cheaper than getting the house vinyl sided, which neither of us really wanted, plus we love the look of the cedar shakes... If we are still in the house in 5 years, we'll consider our options again, but for now it looks good!

we have plans to powerwash and stain our cedar shingles soon. They look SO much better once powerwashed, its not worth replacing them.
