Did Anyone Hear Of A Four Day School Week?
Here in Florida they arre considering a four day school week...maybe to start in about a month..my sister in bohemia said they might be doing it on Long Island too. It is because of the high gass prices. But it means longer days buy adding about 1 1/2 hours to the school day. What do you guys thinks of this?

I might get shot by saying this, but I think school should be year round. I think it would help with the need for summer day care.
As far as a 4 day school week, I would be all for it, if it was the same for the work week. No reason why the rest of us not in a public school need to suffer (and yes, I am a teacher, but I teach ESL to adults in a year round program. I understand that teaching is hard, so no one can tell me that song and dance about how I don't know how hard they work )

I haven't heard of that here, and I am in a program with several superintendants.  I don't think it would work anyway--too many working parents without daycare.

I don't think it will ever happen.
1. What about sports? If they extend the day then no high school sports when it starts getting dark earlier.
2. Some bus companies are unionized and it would be a cut in pay.
3. I start my day at 7:10 and am contracted to work in the building until 2:20 but then I come home and do at least a couple of hours of grading. I'd probably have to do all of my grading on Fridays if they extend the teaching day. The unions are too strong in NYS.
4. What about all of the other activites kids do after school? Dance classes, karate, play dates, etc.
I don't think it will happen.

parents wouldnt go for it. that would be more ammo to vote the budgets down!
FH is a teacher, and if he had to teach two more classes per day he wouldnt want to.
and I agree about the year round schooling - that would conserve oil in the winter.

I think it would be fine for here because the county i live in is unnion free. Plus my sisters here are both teachers and they go an hour to hour and a half each way to work. This is a union free state most companies are union free I used to work at Publix (kinda like a pathmark) there is no unions there. Also they are changing the school start and end dates to Sept and June like ny right now there Aug - may. Thats going to be a hard change it takes affect in 2007.

I've heard about the idea, but it will never happen on LI because working parents would not and could not let it happen.

That would never happen. As it is the push for full day kindergarten is still going strong.
