Those with crate trained big dogs

Do you have anything on the floor of the crate?

We used to keep sheets but Casey pushed them away and wouldn't sleep on them..and then chewed them to pieces. Then I bought a crate pad and she chewed it.

What do you use?

We have a small blanket in Casey's cage and she lays on it most of the time.

Nope - she nevers chews it - actually she is very protective it - god forbid, I have to wash it - she goes nuts.
It was a little fleece blanket that I had for years and never used. I put it in there the day we got her and it has been in there ever since.

Re: Those with crate trained big dogs

when we crate trained Tiger the same thing happened. I put blankets and a pillow in there and he chewed it up. We then put a fleece blanket in the crate and he was fine, and warm.
Now he is 2 years old, and no longer in his crateChat Icon

Re: Those with crate trained big dogs

OK got a fleece blanket for her today at old navy. So we'll see. 10 bucks says it will be partially chewed by tomorrow morning Chat Icon Chat Icon

I want to start letting her sleep outside the crate at night so at least she gets a break from the crate if she has to be in it while we're at work. It works when we are at my FIL's house - she sleeps the whole night on the floor (usually). I considered letting her sleep in my room on a doggie bed. But the thing is, my 2 cats have always slept with us. And we are getting brand new furniture this weekend. So I'm not sure its a great idea to have her in there with us. I MAY try letting her sleep downstairs in her dog bed. I might sleep on the couch a few nights to see how it goes. As long as there's nothing chewable. Ahhhh parenting!

Re: Those with crate trained big dogs

When Midori was in her crate she would chew or bunch up just about anything I put in there.

I did read that as part of the crate training process you should put an old (and unwashed) article of your clothing in the crate with the pooch. This will comfort him or her because your smell is on it....

Might be worth a try with an old (unwashed) blanket. Or just use the Old Navy blanket for a night or two and then put it in the crate.

Re: Those with crate trained big dogs

Yeah I did that. She still chewed it Chat Icon But I'm leaving it in there. It's chilly at night!! Hopefully I can have her sleep outside of the crate soon.
