Re: How soon did you start taking Folic Acid??

You should take it if you are TTC as Folic Acid only stays in your system for 24 hrs. Since you don't know for 2 weeks or so if you are PG this is when the baby's neural tube forms. FA prevents defects

Re: How soon did you start taking Folic Acid??

Actually, I was told that it was a good idea for every woman in childbearing years, (TTC or not) to be taking folic acid regularly. When I did research on my own, the suggested amounts varied from website to website and person to person. According to my doctor, the 400 milligrams I was taking and the 800 milligrams I planned to take when I became pregnant wasnt and would not have been enough for me. He told me to take one MICROgram. Make sure you check with your doc. Every woman is different.

OOPS. I screwed up the abbreviations. I am taking 2 and a half 400mcg pills which is equivalent to 1 MILLIGRAM. Sorry for the confusion. I am not big on metric conversion.

2 years ago. My doctor told me to take 400mg and then to talk to him when we were ready to ttc.

Re: How soon did you start taking Folic Acid??

We are going to TTC this coming August.

I had my Dr. appt at the end of May. I had heard to start being ready about 3 months prior to TTC. He put me on 1000 mcg also. That's 2.5 pills of 400mcg.

I am taking it everyday. He does not think I need to take prenatals. I will take them once I am pregnant.
