Spinoff on Sex Talk

I think a majority of parents want their kids to be open and be able to talk to them about anything. However, I don't think that many kids have very open relationships with their parents. Why do you think this is the case? Does it have to do with the parents and the way they raised their kids or are the kids the reason why the relationships aren't as open?

In my family, my parents always let me know they were there if I wanted to talk about anything. They were pretty easy going so I was never afraid of their reaction. I was the reason why my parents didn't really know much about me outside of how I did in school and who my friends were. Sometimes my mom would try to ask me about things, but I always shut her out. I guess I just don't like to share things. I'm not sure if it was b/c of embarassment or b/c I'm just a pretty private person.

My parents always said that we can tell them anything, but then if it was something they didn't like, we would get in troubleChat Icon

Re: Spinoff on Sex Talk

I think everyone's case is different. My case, my parents had these certain beliefs, and if us kids thought different, then we were wrong. They thought they were always right. And my parents were very strict because they always assumed the worst.
Till this day I never went to a sleepover, high school party, football game, etc....
Al because I would end up pregnant or become a slut.

So, no I never confided in my parents. They would think my thoughts or questions would lead to something bad.Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff on Sex Talk

My parents were super strict, but my mother always made it known that if I ever got pregnant to tell her and we will work it out. She also told me not to hesitate going on the pill if I felt it was necessary.

I waited until I was 20, the next morning I told my mother. I did not want all my years of telling her I wasn't doing anything to be wasted if she found out. I denied being active for years, she always questioned me.

I actually totally agree with you though I am sure many do not. My parents didnt share the birds and bees with me and I turned out just fine....I think : ) As an adult I can totally talk to my family about anything.

I did think, when i was 21, i was PG and freaked out and told my mom.

THAT is the kind of relationship i would want with my daughter...
If i am needed as a mom...they feel comfortable to talk with

My mom was always very open with us. I always knew that if I got pregnant young, I could come to her.

In fact, while i was in law school and in between insurance companies I went off the pill. I didn't have a bf or anything- so I didn't think it was a big deal. My mom insisted I get the pill and paid for it.

She even told me if I married someone without living with them first, she would be upset.

ETA: I hope I have that kind of relationship with my daughter.

While my parents (mainly mom) were very supportive and knew a lot of what was going on with our lives, we didn't include our sex life in our conversations. I felt that it was a private thing. Also I think it was a matter of disappointing them.

My mom gave me the talk (we were both embarrassed) and told me that I can always come to her. I know however that if I did, she would be extremely embarrassed to talk about sex. So I never discussed that with her. I want my kids to be able to come to me but understand if they don't. LIke someone said, it is a private thing, but I would like them to know that I am there to talk if they want to.

Re: Spinoff on Sex Talk

we could not even mention sex in my house Chat Icon we were raised very catholic and we never once spoke about the birds and the bees etc...i cant even say things to my mom now - she gets embarrassed! a shame really....DH and I will be open and honest with our kids. No shame! (In a good way, I mean..if they have questions, I'd like them to feel that we are approachable)/
