Do racoons go after cats???
We have a whole family of raccoons living on my block. Mind you, I live in an area of Queens where you would least expect to find them.
The other night my cats where on the screened in porch in the back of my house. I go to check on them and I hear noises coming from the bushes. I turn the light on and three raccoons where in my backyard. They didn't even run. They actually came up the stairs to look in the screen door.
I never let my cats out but I am wondering - would they rip through the screen to attack my cats???

I would be careful. Maybe you should keep your front door closed. Raccoons are nasty and very vicious.. .....

Call animal control. If the raccoons did not run or fear you when you came to the door or turned the lights on that could be a sign that they are aggressive (ie, possible distemper).
And yes, they will go after cats and dogs.

Thanks everyone for the info. My friend told me that animal control will not come for racoons - not until they hurt someone at least. I'l try though. Thanks.

where in queens? i grew up in MV and we would sometimes see raccoons.

That is so annoying. I hate how it has to become a severe problem before they will do anything. Maybe if you tell them that they tried to come through your screens (heaven forbid it really happens  ).

Some racoons can be very aggressive
My uncle had a family of them on his property and after sundown you really couldn't be in the backyard because they were looking for food in the garbage.
One summer we were staying there and my father got home late and was met by the momma racoon and her babies in tow. He just froze She really meant business.

MrsTC - I am from Elmhurst, I grew up on the boarder of Maspeth and MV. Now I am closer to Queens Center but my block has a lot of trees and garages in the backyards.
