Just a random thought...
I don't blame dd for not wanting to sleep in her crib. The mattress is so hard and uncomfy.

I bought one of those foam pads for a twin size bed and cut it to fit in the crib. It's not much but I think it makes a difference.

Is that safe though? I thought the mattress was flat and hard for a reason.

It should be firm to prevent SIDs. One theory on SIDs is that it is caused by gaps in a mattress (or blanket). If your baby's mouth winds up near an air pocket in the blanket - the baby will be breathing in oxygen & out carbon dioxide. Eventually the air pocket will not longer have oxygen but only carbon dioxide which will casue Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
