I understand and I cannot say I disagree with you but I also see the other side as well. Even take Bono, who I think does amazing work for poverty and should be commended. There are thousands of nameless, faceless people without his money and celebrity that do the same work and cannot get people to recognize the horrors in Africa. It seems that a famous person has to attached to something to get it recognized.
I commend celebrities who use their fame for a cause but I do wonder why it has to take that to get people to give $, read, whatever. I do not blame the celebs, it just raises questions. JMO.
I didn't read the whole thread, just the last few posts before mine so forgive me for not taking everything into account.
I agree with what you are saying in the abstract, but in reality it's the voices that are heard that have the influence in our society - it's the politicians, the celebrities, and the athletes that have that voice.
My friends father runs a charity for Africa, his recognition in no way, shape, or form can compete with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's efforts. They are recognizable figures and I bet they have done more to get people to notice Africa than my friends dad had has in over 20-years.
I think it's terrible, but then I don't fault A.J. and B.P. because they did a GOOD thing and that outweighs the "because they are a celebrity" issue for me.
I hope it doesn't sounds like I am faulting celebrities who do good things because I really do not blame them. I commened Bono, Oprah, Angelina, Brad, etc and all those who give of their time to do good for others. I think it is great. But I do not think what Angelina et al do is any better than what your friend's dad does. He is to be commended as well. They are all doing good for humanity.
My comments were more toward the American public, as Redhead pointed out. I just think it is sad that people put so much into what celebs say or do.

its soo true. Even right here on on very own little board...how many political or religious threads do you see in comparison to who is wearing what or who is dating who.
Trentsblog gets quoted a GAZILLION times more then CNN, Msnbc ect

I mean how many threads are about celeb and their lives are there...
It amazes me how interested, we as a society, are in these peoples every move...
it is only getting worse
exactly. I dont think there are many people here who continue to post for a cause. In fact, I can only think of one..Regi...she is always looking out for homeless pets. Other than that, I really dont remember seeing posts for causes (except red cross when Katrina struck)

It's more than the American public I think ... it's England and Italy and Canada ... we're a world facinated with celebrities. I was in Africa on my honeymoon with people from all over the world and we talked about American Celebrities A LOT. Everyone knows our celebrities, they have that much influence over the world ... it is very scary.

I agree.
I find it interesting that a thread titled "brittany" was put up about 20 (or so) minutes after a thread about New Orleans and the brittany thread has more views already.

I like this idea too. This is usually when the drama starts b/c people are passionate about their political and religous views. But I still think it's worth a try.

Hey guys. I was the one that originally posted the reading question. I wasn't putting Oprah down at all, I love her. I was just commenting I guess on society that a lot of people, not all, NEED celebrities to tell them that it's cool to read and what to read. At times I've been at a loss of what to read next and actually read whatever Oprah suggested. But, for me, I will always thank my teachers for introducing me the joy of reading.
