calliing all moms who breastfed...

Need Advice, here is some background... I never had a huge milk supply, barely enough to feed DD. She had to be supplemented with formula at 2 1/2 months. Fast forward to now (DD is 3 1/2 months) and I am not producing enough for even one feeding. Chat Icon When I tried to BF yesterday she started crying out of frustration.
DH fed her a bottle last night while I pumped. I wanted to see how much was there. Well after no feedings for 5 hours, I only pumped out an ounce.Chat Icon

I was hoping to wean Gracie to the point where I can BF twice or three times a day at night and in the morning. This way while I work (3 days a week), she would be on formula at the day care and at when I am home, I would BF her. Now, I don't know if I can even do that.

Any advice? A friend told me to keep pumping & drink water. I did that yesterday, I pumped 5 times and ended up with 3 ounces for the whole day. I have been pumping all along, drinking water and fenugreek tea, eating oatmeal, etc. etc. etc.
Is this normal? What else can I do? TIAChat Icon

BF is all about supply and demand. I would mostly try to get her to nurse she will get out more than a pump and will build up your supply. I would nurse her and then pump afterwards. Good LuckChat Icon

Ok, But I don't want to back to feeding every two hours, I CANNOT do that again. She just started to sleep through the night and since I am the only one who wakes up for her, I need to sleep. I feel guilty for saying that, but I was a CRAZY person when I was nursing every two hours. I had no sleep and I was getting sick from my body shutting down because of no sleep and dehydration (even though I was drinking tons of water).

Should I BF her every five hours would my supply adjust accordingly?

As much as it stinks, I think if you only nurse every 5 hours your supply may sufferChat Icon I am not anywhere near an expert, but I think you would need to do it more than every 5 hours if you have supply problems. I am not much help at allChat Icon Have you tried a lactation consultant?Chat Icon

Re: calliing all moms who breastfed...

it sounds like we have had a very similar situation. I definitely understand your frustration. we had to supplement b/c my supply was low and I contacted an LC who I'd be happy to refer you to if you want to get the supply up. I was on a nursing/pumping schedule with the herbs and it was working really well. I had the same sleeping through the night issue and didn't want to get up. I was told that I'd have to go back to doing it often during the day if I was serious about getting it up so I did, but I did not get up at night. However, at 3 mos apparently your supply dips so I'm now suffering again. But I'm not giving up yet. Let me know if you want to try an LC. I'm also starting a prescription med now to boost milk supply to get me over this 3 mos hump. If you want I'd be happy to let you know how it works. Chat Icon

ETA: I've been told now by tons of people that the amount you pump is not a reliable indicator of how much milk baby can get or how much you have. Some women have no supply issues and yet cannot pump an ounce.

I had a similar situation and started supplementing about 3 months. My mils usplly never increased, no matter how much I pumped. I wound up stopping because I was becoming angry, hurt and guiilty and that defeats the whole purpose. Good luck!
