i was watching Rent this weekend and i was thinking that I personally dont know anyone with AIDS or died of AIDS. i realize how wide spread it is.. am i alone in this?

Ummm... people have died and not listed the actual cause of death as AIDS. Technically, no one dies from AIDS but from something else brought on by AIDS.

I know of at least three cases of people who have died and the family kept it very hush, hush that their adult child died of AIDS. All three said it was "cancer".
Of course, such a lie only contributes to the stigma and the belief that AIDS is not a problems for the general population.

FYI: LI has the highest per capita HIV cases in any suburban area in the country.

Re: spin off of AIDS..

I have had 2 family members die of AIDS. I also think people are less likely to say AIDS, they say they have cancer, I think cancer is more widely accepted, AIDS is at times looked at as something you contract because of your own negligence Chat Icon

The most recent stat is about 1 in 45 people from 18-about 40. That's the latest stats from Nassau County gov't.

Reasons... sheer population, proximity to NYC where it pretty much started, IV drug use... yes, we all have people in all of our neighborhoods who are we just don't know it.

The fastest gorwing population to be HIV positive is the 65+ group because they don't think they can get it. It only takes one elderly man (and because of his generation might think it's ok to visit prostitutes) to pass it along. And in that population there are a lot more women then men so add in some Viagra and they have numerous girlfriends in these condo communitites. So much so down in FL they have the nickname "Condo Cowboy" for elderly men who have numerous girlfriends. Sixty minutes or Dateline did an expose' a few years ago.

I had a friend die of AIDS in middle school; he was a hemophiliac who got it from a transfusion. One of my good friend's uncle's died of AIDS in the early 90s.

I read an article recently about the spread of HIV among seniors in Florida. It was really scary because like you said, they felt immune.

I agree that the high number is due to sheer population, IV drug use, etc. Unfortunately, in the gay young male community (and there is a large one in this area) the numbers are climbing again because of meth. There is a new problem where meth users have unprotected sex with multiple partners in clubs, etc.

It is a terrible and sad disease and Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon to anyone effected by it.
