Question for the BFing Moms...
My sister is always asking me for advice and doesn't really go on line so I'm sorry if I've had to ask a few questions for you guys here.
She is EBF and her daughter is now 5.5 months old. She goes back to work in September. So far she hasn't had any sucess in getting her DD to eat from a bottle. She pumps and has had the babysitter, her husband, as well as our other sister try to give her DD bottles and the baby refuses and just screams and cries.
My advice to her was to try different bottles and also to try EVERY day but she's nervous to do that because usually the EBM goes to waste and she is only able to pump about 2-3 oz at a time, so she doesn't have a huge reserve.
Does anyone have any advice on getting a 5-6 month old to take a bottle after EBF for the whole time? She has so far tried bottles, sippy cups (at the dr's recommendation) and those bottles that look like a boob from onestepahead.com and the baby has refused all of them.

The only thing that worked for us was the "switch and bait"... meaning, I would set Alex up as if I was about to BF her... lay her down, pull up my shirt, etc... but just a second before she would latch, I'd stick a bottle in her mouth... that way she got used to the bottle. After about a week, we transitioned so that only DH would bottle feed her... if I was around, she always expected BF, so I would leave the room...

I took Beth's advice/experience and I swear it was the only thing that worked for me to get DD onto that bottle. She absolutely refused the bottle, and I knew she took to Advents, since she took them fine when she was just born. For about 2 weeks I was the only one who could give her that bottle by "tricking" her.
I wouldn't fight her on it though. I would give her the bottle, try for about 5 mins, if she got too upset I gave her boob, but would try at the next feeding.
It took a bit, but she learned how to "resuck" from a bottle.

I was concerned about that too, so at first I would only put in an ounce or two in the bottle, just so she would get used to the bottle little by little. For me, I started with BM... I figured the transition to the bottle was hard enough, I didn't want to make it any more difficult by putting in another strange substance in it. So, for the first couple of weeks we used BM... eventually, once she really got used to the bottle, I started supplementing with formula. If she's concerned about wasting milk maybe she can do a mix of formula and BM?

I was going to mention that, actually... it probably isn't a good idea to start with formula in case she has a reaction, then she'll really have a terrible association with the bottle. Then, I'd suggest she start trying out the bottle, but only put an ounce or two in it. I doubt her daughter will eat much more than that when she's first experimenting with the bottle, and that way she doesn't have to waste quite as much BM...

I did it with both, formula and BM (1 at a time, i didn't mix) In the beginning i used only formula. Then i started pumping some and using some reserves, not much i had like 10-15 ounces in my freezer.
I have the same problem as your sister, I can only pump 2-3 ounces at a time and that is being hooked up to the pump for 20 minutes. I don't have supply issues either. I just hate pumping :)
I did notice that DD liked the bottle better when there was formula in it. I don't know if she tasted the Bm and got upset that it wasn't coming from the boob.
Also I had to warm up what ever was in it to body temperature, like it would be coming out of me. She Absolutely refused room temp, cold, anything that wasn't warm.
I am in process of weaning gianna, and she gets about 4 bottles a day now, since I don't plan on pumping when i go back to work in september, so she will need to be on formula and 100% bottles by the end of the month.

Ella took to a bottle easily - maybe because I started her early (2.5 weeks). She now goes back and forth with no problem, and takes a bottle from anyone.
I started with only BM in the bottle, and I had DH give her the first one so she wouldn't be expecting to nurse.
One thing I noticed - she liked it body temperature. She's less picky about that now and will take it room temperature, but initally she wanted it the same temperature whether it was boob or bottle.
I would try to feed her when she's calm and not yet too hungry. Maybe she won't get so upset then.

My DS didn't have any trouble taking BM from a bottle, but I just started to try to give him formula because I can't pump much and he refuses it. If he does get come in his mouth he spits it out! I was going to suggest a cup, but I see that didn't work. kellymom has some articles that might help link
