ok moms need advice re-giving child medicine

How do you get your child to take the children's tylenol drops w/o spitting out the whole thing? She's done it twice now and I know she needs it. Chat Icon

When Bella was really little and really a nightmare to give medicine...DH would hold her nose and I would shove the syringe to the back of her throat...

it sounds horrible, but it literally was the ONLY way to get it in her...

sounds so horrible...

ETA: It was a PED suggestion

Does she take a pacifier? Put the drops on the side of her mouth by her cheek, put some in, then put the paci in her mouth so she sucks on it. Continue until she's done. If she doesn't take a paci maybe you could try with her bottle?

They also make a little medicine dispense that has a nipple attached. You just squirt the medicine into the little "bottle" and attach the nipple. The baby then just drinks it the same way they would a regular bottle.

Short of that, I was just told to squirt a few drops into the side of her mouth at a time until she swallows all of it.

My kids love it for some reason.

You are suppose to put it as far back in the cheek as you can get it though.

I used both the dispenser & the cheek method.

I give it to DD when I feed her a bottle. I squirt the dropper right in the side of her mouth while she's still drinking the bottle - 99% of the time she takes it down. Ive become a pro at this between Zantac, Tylenol. Antibiotics and Mylicon!

Re: ok moms need advice re-giving child medicine

I would make a small bottle - 1 or 2 ounces and mix the tylenol in it and then feed her. That way I was pretty sure she'd eat the whole bottle...

I'll definitely try this method. Sounds like it would work. I thought about mixing it in with milk, but DH was concerned about that.

There is some validity to DH's concern. First, if you mix it and they don't drink all of it, you don't know how much medicine the baby got. Also, some medications can not be mixed with, or taken with milk. If you are going to mix it with a small amount of their milk to make it more palatable for them or to encourage them to drink it, just check with your pharmacist first to make sure they are compatable.

Good Luck. Keep us updated. Sorry, I didn't mean put the medicine in her bottle. I meant, give her some medicine, then put the bottle in her mouth (if she didn't take a paci) that way she'll be forced to swallow when she sucks from the bottle.

Re: ok moms need advice re-giving child medicine

Well, I tried the med then paci approach and she dribbled some out but less than yesterday. Next I mixed some with a tiny amount of milk 4 hours later and she drank it so...

I just feel so bad for her. She had two immunizations yesterday and she's just so not herself now. I feel like any amount of they tylenol that i can get her to swallow will help. Thanks guys!Chat Icon
