Mostly at work. Now where we live now I have a lot of friends from school (went to school in VA, now live near DC).

Where do you live?

there are a ton of people on here that don't live in NY, so you can make some friends right here!

Re: For girls who moved far from family/friends

At first when I moved away from LI, it was great becuase all my college friends were in the area. Now that all but one of my college friends have moved away, its definately harder.

Thankfully, I work in a young/fun environment and have met a lot of people from work, as well as friends of friends. Our closest friends at the moment are actually friends of friends.

Hoping that in the next 4 years my family moves up here.

Re: For girls who moved far from family/friends

I met most of my friends at work also, I took some cooking classes at a local college and met some people, but the best catalyst for meeting people so far has been having a baby! I have met about 20 ladies through having a baby and we are having the time of our lives enjoying our maternity leaves together!!!

Doing temp worrk will help you to meet some people, maybe join a church/synogogue whatever, get out there and just talk to people and don't be scared to say to them, hey give me your email address!

Good Luck!

I am in the same boat-- I am from Long Island, live in CT (where I went to school and where most of my good friends are) but am moving to Manhattan where I know NOT A SINGLE SOUL! I will not be working, so I have no clue how I am going to make connections...and help you get would help me too!

Re: For girls who moved far from family/friends

you can browse MYSpace for people in your area

smile and make little comments when out shopping. I was in a store with a plant, and 3 people talked to me about it!

Take a walk in your neighborhood.

go to your neighbors and introduce yourself.

Host a "Get To Know Your Neighbors" cookie swap party or dinner party or coffee & cake. Invite your close neighbors, ask them to bring a batch of cookies w/ recipe and an empty container so everyone can take a bunch home.

Re: For girls who moved far from family/friends

i recently moved 600 miles away from my family and friends...we became quick friends with our next door neighbors...we are actually having them over for a bbq tomorrow...when we take our dogs for a walk we usually talk to other people around the neighborhood....As soon as i get a job I'm sure i'll make friends quickly there.
Do u work? or maybe get involved in community activites...or maybe a get to know your neighbors party?

Re: For girls who moved far from family/friends

I started by making friends from work, then they would bring friends and so on and so forth. By that I was able to weave in and out of groups and pick and choose those that I got along with most.

Re: For girls who moved far from family/friends

I've been living here 2 years and I really only have a few friends in the area.....one is from work and the other 2 are LIF girls (sassyz75 and josieb0925 Chat Icon ). Other than that I don't know anyone besides people that I casually talk to in my neighborhood....everyone tells us we will meet people when we have kids and they start school...great...that won't be for at least another 5 or 6 years Chat Icon

All of our other friends live in Queens and LI. Chat Icon

ETA: we did join a bowling league one season and we would up being on a team with people who were all friends already Chat Icon that didn't really work out. i've made a few acquaintances through attending classes for my master's....

other than that...it's hard. Chat Icon

Re: For girls who moved far from family/friends

I want to move to Florida ( my parents live there) but I am so scared to make the move. I am more scared for my son who is 4 years old. He is on the shy side and I dont want him to have problems adjusting

Re: For girls who moved far from family/friends

one thing to remember is that whatever you do, where ever you move to, it doesn't happen overnight. It takes a long time to make friends and to feel like you have a complete life where you live. I have lived in England for 7 years and it took me probably about 2 years to feel like it was home.

Now, it is very much home to me and I feel its where I belong. I think that is the hard point to come to!

it really $ucks. i have a couple of friends, but they just arent the same friends that i have back home. i hang out with my DH's friends, but they are just so different from me. i am a pub type of girl and DH doesnt drink and loathes pubs. i am hoping one day it will all come together, but i think i just had a breakdown today, crying in a train station after a not so good job interview. like the poster above said- you have to give it time. i am getting a cat this week, i hope she will be my new friend-lol.
