My Grandfather passed away...update from post asking for help with 24 hr. care
Unfortunately my grandfather is very sick. He's been in a nursing home for the last 3 months and today we decided to bring him home next week and begin hospice care. Hospice only provides up to 4 hours of assistance per day and it's not every day. My grandmother is going to need help since he's pretty much bed-ridden at this point. The nursing home was only able to give me ONE number for an individual, can you believe it? I would like more options and to be able to interview several people.
Any help would be great during this stressful time!

Aw I'm sorry to hear that Jeannie.
We used an agency in Queens for my aunt when she was home--the aide went shopping when the hospice worker came for those few hours. The agency we used was recommended by the social workers at the hospital where they diagnosed her condition (she passed away from lung cancer). Your local hospital should be able to put you in touch with a few reputable agencies. Going through agencies the workers are screened, but the worker does not get as much of the money since the agency does take a large percentage.

Most churches have names of people who live in and leave on the weeknds. It is pretty reasonably priced, our lady of Lourdes in Centerport has a reputable HHA referral service.

Thank you to those who offered advice but my grandfather passed away peacefully on Monday night. We thought we had a few more weeks but I guess he decided it was time to go being that he spent the weekend with his wife, daughter, grandchildren and great-granddaughter. We are all so sad but are thankful he is not suffering and living in pain anymore.
