IUI Question

I went back to the RE today and she did another sonogram to see if my follies grew. She said she predicts that I will ovulate this weekend CD18-20. I have to go back on Friday for the IUI unless I get a surge before then. My question is, Does the IUI hurt?

No ma'am! The way my doctors office runs is that when I go in, they first have my look at the container with the sperm and verify the names are correct, then they have me sign off on the legal paperwork.
Next I lay on the table, throw my feet in the stirrups and get ready for the doctor.
When he comes in he inserts the speculum (the same cold metal device used when you get a pap), then they swab my cervix. Next the take the cathedar and get the sperm out of the vile. The catheter that is used is about as skinny as a piece of spaghetti but not as long. When it is first inserted you will feel it and you MAY experience a MILD cramp (not even as bad as an AF cramp) and then you are done.
The whole thing takes under 5 minutes.

Not at all! All you will feel is the speculum being inserted (just like a regular pap). You won't feel a think while the IUI is done. I didn't feel a thing during my IUIs. I had a little cramping once after the IUI but it was not much at all. GOOD LUCK!

I am confused about why they are 'predicting' ovulation. Why aren't they having you come in for bloodwork ? and more u/s ? I would ask to come in before Friday to get bloodwork and a u/s. If you ovulate late on sunday or monday, Friday's IUI will not be effective. You really should go in for an IUI 12-36 hours after your LH surge.

Did they have you at least use opks to see if you are surging ?


Colleen, after conceiving naturally on your own....twice, why did the doctor think IUI's are the best route ?

Hi Michelle, my appointment on Friday is for the u/s. They will do an IUI if I get a surge tomorrow. If I get a surge Friday then it will be done on Saturday. She said it was my choice to do the IUI, she said the percentage of getting pregnant is alittle higher. I will try anything right about now for this to happen. If they wanted me to BD standing on my head..I would When I posted my original statement I was alittle confused. I thought they would do the IUI knowing I will ovulate this weekend. But i called and they said it should be done the day after the surge.

Ok that makes sense :) I always prefer to get bloodwork and u/s done prior to IUIs because, I had positive opks,....two days prior to O. The first cycle, I did an IUI, I felt the timing was completely off. Lots of baby dust !!!!

I dont wanna be the "downer" because I know Im the exception to it, but I had some bad cramping after 3 of my IUI's. This last one Was great, nothing at all, but i was shocked and scared when I had the cramping after the first because everyone said It was painless. So do not worry if you do experience cramping. I found laying down immediately lessened the pain, and it was barable, just uncomfortable. The procedure itself for me never hurt and literally is over so quickly!
