Sheff may have spent final day in pinstripes...
Gary Sheffield may have spent his final day in Yankee pinstripes. But manager Joe Torre will return.
Sheffield was 0-for-4 and had trouble defensively at first base in Saturday's 8-3 loss against Detroit. It ended what was a terrible postseason for the 37-year-old. Sheffield was 1-for-12 in the series. After returning from his wrist injury, Sheffield was 8-for-40 (.200) with two homers and seven RBIs over 12 games.
The Yankees hold a $13 million option on Sheffield for next season. General manager Brian Cashman said he was not prepared to deal with those issues yet.
"That's for down the road," he said. "I have no idea what we would do."
But Sheffield might not have a place on the team. The Yankees tried him at first base and he was erratic, even having problems catching throws from infielders. He dropped a throw from Derek Jeter on Saturday that cost the Yankees a double play in the eighth inning.
Sheffield also had difficulty with his footwork around the bag.
Sheffield left after the game without speaking to the media.
