MD vs. OBGYN

I've been going to my gyno for a few years, and I love her - she is awesome. It has recently occurred to me that she is an MD, not an OBGYN. The practice is XYZ Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is located in a hospital complex, and they are great, onsite ultrasounds and lab etc.. She has always been great to me and I never had any complaints, but I wonder if her degree makes any difference? I'm probably just being paranoid, but I want to make sure my baby and I are getting the best care out there, does it make a difference seeing an MD vs. an OBGYN? Thanks for any responses!!

OBGYN is not a degree. All OBGYNS are either an MD or DO, OBGYN is just their specialty.

I don't think I understand... all OBGYNs are MD's. But not all MD's are OBGYNs.

Is the doctor not board certified as an Obgyn. I really don't understand.

You may want to check out NY Doctor Profile to see what the doctor is certified for and what boards she is on.

Personally, I would not go to a doctor who is not Board Certified- but that's just me.

Just check that she is an OB. Some gynocologists don't deliver babies.

Re: MD vs. OBGYN

Hmm I can't tell if she's certified - but OBGYN is definitely her specialty. I live in VA so that link wont work. I would rather have someone certified for sure, although I doubt I'll find someone I like as much as her. I am going to call the office and check it out. She has delivered tons of babies, and said she would be the one to deliver mine...thanks again for your help!

I didn't know that. My old firm used to do medmal, but I never did. Thanks for the tip.

Re: MD vs. OBGYN

MANY MDs will NOT deliver babies for insurance reasons, also an MD may not have the experience you may need if you have a difficult or higher risk pregnancy. I would speak to the MD about their comfort level.
