Will you encourage your child to continue speaking or learn their native tongue?
In high school I babysat for a family who adopted an older child from Russia. He was about 6 years old I guess. At the time he wanted nothing to do with Russia anymore, and refused to speak the language at all. Now that he's older (in college! ) he regrets not hanging onto that skill.
I think everyone here is getting babies, do you plan on having them take lessons in their native tongue?

I think they might be too young to comprehend native vs. english....who knows if they will even be talking at all??--but if they were older I think it would be great!

Ditto! I also plan to take Korean classes soon just because I have a love of learning languages and think it would be a nice gesture to teach my child a few words until s/he's old enough to take classes on his/her own.

My husband is starting to learn one of the languages of Ethiopia. There are over 400 spoken there! But it is NOT easy..it is sorta arabic looking with VERY different sounds than we have. He is hoping to learn a few key words to help us while we are there. If my son ever wants to learn it, I will gladly pay for his lessons.

Jack had very little language when he came home at 19mo but every once in a while he comes out with something in Russian. The first time he saw snow this season he said Mommy that (snow in Russian) over and over. We dont speak Russian but I have confirmed what he is saying with some Russian speaking friends. I guess some words are just stored away in his brain. When he is older we will enroll him in a Russian language class if he wants to try it.

It think it's really neat that you all want to include parts of their culture in their lives. It's so nice.
