Being paid as an independent contractor

I got a job offer, however, it stated that I'd be "paid as an independent contractor, and will be responsible for my own taxes".
Does anyone know how this works?

For instance, let's say the job pays $100K/yr, do I get taxed a lot more because I'd be independent, or would it be the same as holding a regular non-exempt/exempt job. Also, approximately how much would I be taxed?
