Dog/Cat Allergies Help - Cleaning House from Previous Owner

We just moved into our new house... and we bought the house from a seller that had a dog and a cat.

My wife is allergic... and I am a little bit. My wife cleaned this house top to bottom (and she is an ANAL cleaner).

We are both sneezing (her worse than me).

Anyone have any suggestions on tricks we can do to help this? I am hoping in time it will just go away.

Is is carpeted? I would rip them out ASAP if so.

Considering she already scrubbed the place (including the walls and baseboards?) how about giving it a good airing out which may not be feasible given the temps lately.

My ENT doctor said he'd be out of business if people got rid of their pets, carpeting, and smoke.
So I'd guess it was the carpeting in your house.

I was just going to say the same thing.
New carpets or have them cleaned.

If we had bought the house we moved into we would have pulled the rugs out - but since we rent we couldn't.
We actually steamed cleaned the rugs about 4 times.

yup. Only way around this. If you really don't want to recarpet, you can try to clean them but most allergists will tell you they just have to go. That was a big thing with us when we were looking - no place where we'd keep the carpets could have had any pets at all. Good thing we don't want to keep a thing in our new place Chat Icon

Thanks. I'll just replace the carpets since carpeting isn't too expensive.

my SIL moved into a house where the previous owners had dogs and smoked heavily! she ripped up all of the carpets and scrubbed the floor underneath and it helped

if the carpets are going would you consider hard flooring? I have bad allergies and lived with pets all my unmarried life. Since being married we don't have any pets and have nearly all of the house in hardwood/tile. What a difference!

We will probably recarpet both bedrooms on the 1st floor. The Living area is also carpeted. The living area I will probably do in a pergo floor. The kitchen and hallway are in this crappy tile that we are going to rip up anyways.

We will just interconnect the living room and kitchen and hallway and do a pergo.
