How many hours/minutes is your school day? I am asking because we were told that suburban schools work longer days. Just doing a little research. I don't need to know where you work.

Re: Nassau/Suffolk Teachers I have a ?

My school hours are as follows:

Sign in 7:50 sign out 3:05
We have to reserve after Tuesday afternoon for meetings (we average 2 a month)
We do 15 hours of Staff development afterschool a year.
We also must stay one day a week in addition for an extra help period 42 minutes.

With our new contract, if it passes, in addition to that we will have:

4 meeting a semester that can go up to 2 hours in length and can also be used by the principal for staff development

We will (they say can but I know it's will) be starting work Aug 31

Also this year because of the lay out of the school calendar we have to make up a Superintentdent conference day that they needed for teaching so we will have to stay 2 other additional nights until 5pm.

We currently have 181 teaching days plus 2 Superintendent's conference days. We are going up to no less than 183 plus 3 Superindents conference days.

Hope that helps. Feel free to FM me if you need more information.

None of the above includes union meetings.

Thanks Jamie

So you're working 7 hrs and 15 minutes a day PLUS all that extra. Wow. There's been a lot of debate about the contract for NYC teachers and I am just trying to get some perspective before I vote.

Understandable. We are in the same situation with our new one. We have been in the bottom of Nassau for a long time- they are finally willing to bring us up to the average for Nassau but we had to give sooooooooooo much back that I am not sure it's worth it--- kind of like you guys in the city. But it seems the trends in all the contracts are more time Chat Icon

We work from 8:40-3:40, 7 hours (8:45-9:15 is common planning time). We are also obligated to a 1 hr. faculty meeting after school once a month.

I am in Eastern Suffolk. We start at 7:20 and end at 2:02. We have 183 days I believe, including 3 conference days, and start Sept 1.

Our contract isn't up for 2 more years. But I don't like what I'm hearing from the other districts!

I teach high school at the second lowest paid district in Nassau. We were just told that starting salary for someone with a MS in the city (under the new contract) is now more than my districtChat Icon

Sign in by 7:10-2:20. 2:00-2:20 is an extra help period every day. BTW: Most people in my dept. (and others) are teaching three preps and several people in the school have a sixth class... we don't get paid 1/5 more of our salary, instead we get paid as if we subbed an extra period for each day (even though the sixth class might be an entirely different prep). A 6th class works out (after taxes) to be about $26 extra a day!!!

1 dept meeting each month (approx one hour, my chairperson is good about that)

1 faculty meeting each month (supposed to start at 2:20 and end at 3:20). My fellow teachers are to blame for it not starting on time. They usually get to the meeting late due to extra help which they should just cut off 5 minutes early on that day.

We are doing period by period attendance through Infinite Campus this year. All training is offered during our preps which is really our time to get other work done... if you ask me this should have been done on a Supt. Conf Day or they should have paid us to come in over the summer (that would have never happened). Without the homeroom in the morning everyone feels like they have to get to work even earlier.

Also, we only have 17 steps to our contract. So after 17 years you only get an additional $1, 250 after 20 years, then $1500 after 25. Everyone of our increases has been under 3% for the last 7 years. I'm at the point in the contract where I am literally losing money staying there but I've been there 8 years and am TTC so what can I do.

Medical, we must pay 14%, again this is higher than the average for Nassau county districts. So we make less and pay more for our insurance.

Dental, we have a "trust fund" that only covers the employee and only reimburses for partial expenses. We have no family dental insurance at all, not even an option. This is a VERY big deal for the women I work with whose husband's run their own business. Essentially, the families have no dental, it's all out of pocket.

FM me if you would like any other details.
