What do people wear to see Broadway plays?
I haven't been to one in a long time...What is considered appropriate?  I was thinking a dress and heels?

I feel like I see such a range whenever we go- some people REALLY dress up, some look like they've just finished cutting the lawn. 
I usually wear dress pants, nice shoes (flats if we've been spending the day and walking a lot) and a nice blouse- similar to what I wear to work. DH wears dress pants and a button down shirt (sometimes a tie. sometimes not) and shoes.

That sounds great! I think that people should "dress up" for the theater!!
personaly, I cant stand when people wear jeans and sweatshirts to the theater....its not the movies...KWIM??

You really could wear anything. Some people get dressed up, and others go in jeans or shorts. What are you going to see?

last time i went i went straight from work in work clothes....
unfortunately the theatre is pretty casual now, and i have seen many people in jeans
you could really wear anything now...
but if you wear a dress, that is nice! make it a nice evening out!

We just went to a play, it was during the day and I had on khakis and a nice shirt and sandals, DH wore jeans and a collared shirt with shoes, most people wore that or even less "dressy". At night I think the same anything goes. I just did a paper on that the dress in theater has changed so much.
what are you going to see?

Avenue Q is pretty laid back and you can totally wear jeans, heels, and a nice shirt...
It's such a great show - have an amazing time!!!

I find that people where whatever to shows these days, there seems to be no dress code. But I agree that I like when people dress up a bit for the theater, I usually do. If it is a Sat night show you can dress up a bit more.

I've worn black jeans and a nice top or pants I would wear to work. it definitely ranges!
I've seen people dress up like they used to and people in jeans and sneakers.

When I see people dressed up for the theatre they are usually from Iowa or somewhere out of town.
I wear whatever I am wearing that day....jeans usually, or maybe nice pants. But I don't dress up...

I agree 100%. I usually wear nice pants and a blouse, or a casual skirt. No jeans, although plenty of people do wear them.

I agree.
Although I think if you over dress for "family circle" type seats then you might feel uncomfortable. I do agree that jeans & such are not appropriate.
