Re: Spinoff to Block Parties
I'd love to know this too. We live on a very busy road, so we could never have a block party, but I'm curious.

Re: Spinoff to Block Parties
We have a block party every year - and DH and I have opted not to participate in recent years. Sometimes I'll still contribute a nominal amount just to be neighborly - - but that's also to 'bribe' them to allow me to exit my street which gets blocked off at noon on the day of the party. Plus, I live at the end of a dead-end - - - so I have no where to go.
Out of respect and safety, I try not to come and go throughout the day....we'll usually set off early in the morning and return late at night.
I don't think they've been mad at me....but we've always had reasons why we weren't participating. If some did get mad - tough!

Re: Spinoff to Block Parties
I'm in Brooklyn (Besonhurst/Dyker Heights) where block parties are held literally every effing weekend...
I've always contributed, whether or not I set up shop the day of, but I have "heard" commotion when a neighbor does not contribute but still takes part in the activities....
As far as "etiquette" goes - I wouldn't hide per se, but unfortunately folks have nothing better to do than look down on those that participate and do not contribute.

Re: Spinoff to Block Parties
We have a block party every so often but have never attended because we always have something else going on. One year we picthed in the full amount, this year I brought down stuff for the kids (glow necklaces, etc).
I don't think it's rude to ask for an accounting. I haven't asked for one because I don't care that much & the contribution isn't outrageous. I do think the person organizing should give out an accounting to those that contributed so they don't put people in the awkward place of asking.

Re: Spinoff to Block Parties
We just had one in our townhouse community and it was lame. We set our tables up in our driveways and people totally didn't mingle! But I made some good food and we had drinks and every now and then I'd say: We're drinking beer sitting in the driveway. Odd.
