The Captain's Official Met/Yankee 2006 Preview Part 2

OK, so now we leave the Bronx and head to the bowels of Queens: Flushing NY. After yet another year of promise turned to heartbreak, the Mets went on a spending rampage, upgrading their infield and bullpen. Can these new acquisitions stand tall where hopefuls such as Glavine, Alomar, Vaughn and Beltran have fallen. Here's what the Shea faithful needs to watch.

Pros

The infield - -while second base is a question mark, the Mets have one of the more solid infields in the NL East. The "experts" predict big things from the tandem of Wright, Reyes, and Delgado. If they stay injury-free and acheive a consistent level of hitting, Met fans could be inf fot a treat.

The bullpen - -In my opinion, the best in the NL East. We have some hungry young guns out in the pasture, led by Billy Wagner. This added insurance will prove to be the difference-maker in many games. They may cut the one-run losses in half. Pay attention to Aaron Heilman, he could provide some excitement.

Problem areas

Starting rotation - -Pedro is starting the year hurt. Assuming he's back in a week, that leaves us with him, Glavine, Traschel, Zambrano and Banister. If Pedro is 100%, we're golden. If he's hurt, we're done. Glavine, Traschel and Zambrano are solid, but disappointing. Banister is a bright spot, but far too young to carry the load. And herein lies the problem of putting all your balls in one mitt.

Cliff Floyd and Carlos Beltran - -if they deliver, it will produce great rewards. The key word is IF. Each has shown a true lack of consistency. Beltran proved to be the biggest "offseason hopeful turned utter disappointment" that we have seen in some time.

Paul Lo Duca - No upgrade seen in acquring him over Mike Piazza.

The Captain's Predicition

Taking all this into consideration, I see the Mets finishing at 85 and 75. They will make a solid run at the NL East and could potentially make the playoffs. At this stage, I see them lasting one round and losing in the second.

I gotta disagree with some of your "cons"

Pedro only pitches every 5th day. If he goes down for say 10 games... we aren't "finished". All it takes is someone to come up and just get hot for a short period of time. Jae Seo did it last year. This year.... maybe Pelfrey? Maybe Heilman?

If we lose Wagner for an extended period of time... then you can say we are "finished".

True to a point. Floyd was pretty much solid all of last year. Why? Because he was healthy. I really think Beltran was playing hurt last year. He had quad issues throughout the 1st half. Then the collision. If both of these players stay healthy... I predict good things (especially from Floyd).

Whats wrong with this? Defensively he is an upgrade. And we also cut down our 'K' total bigtime. This team K's WAY too much last year. We subtract Cameron... we add LoDuca... thats a difference of 120+ K's.

You are short two games (162 games). They will need to win more than 85 games to take the east. 85 games definitely won't get you the wild card. If you expect them to at least make the 1st round... you have to be looking MINIMUM 88-90 games.

I predict 88-74.... 90 wins if Floyd and Delgado both have over 140 games. Whether we make the playoffs with that record will depend on the records of the other teams.

Here here, I totally agree with this statement..
I sort of have a "wait and see" attitude about the season this year (I'm making NO PREDICTIONS whatsoever) but I love your observations and think both posts were written with class, intergrity and unbiased opinions..
