We had a GREAT time!!! It was the first cruise for both of us and we were not disappointed! We went to celebrate our first anniversary, and DH said he liked it more than our French Polynesian honeymoon!
We booked the cruise online directly on royalcaribbean.com. It was very easy to navigate and it answered most of our questions. We chose to book the airline tickets through them as well only because if your flight is late they are responsible to get you to the ship. We did not buy travel insurance, and luckily did not need it!
We flew Iberia airlines to Barcelona with a short connection in Madrid. Both the Barcelona and Madrid airports are very nice and have lots of signs in English. You can also use dollars or euros at the airport.
After going through customs (only took about 10 minutes) we met the Royal Caribbean rep right outside of baggage claim. We waited for some other people to arrive and then they took our luggage and we boarded a bus for the 20 minute ride to the ship. We still can’t get over the flawless service and the extreme organization of the whole trip – it was amazing!!
We got to the ship early and when we boarded they asked everyone to have lunch first and then proceed to our staterooms. We were on deck 7 and had a balcony. I highly recommend getting a balcony. It made the room feel so much bigger and it was really nice to go out there in the am and the pm. Our room was pretty spacious. I think it was considered a deluxe room. We had a bed area and then a separate sitting area with a couch, cocktail table and a desk. They make very good use of space in the rooms and we easily emptied 3 suitcases and had room for everything. Definitely bring your own hairdryer. There was a tiny 1200 watt. You have the same housekeeper (stateroom attendant) all week and she cleans in the am and then does turn down service, replaces towels and leaves chocolate on your pillow and leaves fun towel art for you.
The ship itself was huge. It held about 3,800 guests and 1,200 crew members. It had an ice skating rink, mini-golf, basketball court, inline skating, a running track, a couple pools, spa & health club, casino, multiple gift shops, 2 nightclubs and quite a few bars and restaurant options. The main dining room was something right out of Titanic! We became friends with an English couple at our table and dined with them almost every night. There were 2 formal nights, but we only attending one. Those were the best nights for people watching. Some of the outfits were hilarious! They ran the gamut – black tie worthy, to really nice pants with a dressy top. Most guys wore suits or Tuxedos. You can also rent the Tux on the ship.
Excursions:
We did one almost every day. They were exhausting, but worth every penny! We had great guides and it was the best way to take advantage of every place we went.
Overall, we had a fantastic time. There are a few downsides to going on a cruise, but the upsides very much outweighed them
