Partial Building collapse.
(New York-WABC, July 14, 2005) — A wall at a building under construction collapsed, hurting several people on the Upper West Side Thursday and leading to a huge recovery effort for the FDNY and NYPD.
It happened at West 100th Street and Broadway just before 9:30 a.m.
The building used to house a Gristides supermarket. The one story wall collapsed onto scaffolding at the site, and it then fell into the street and on the sidewalk.
As many as six people were hurt, and are being treated. Eyewitness News has learned that at least one construction worker may still be trapped in the rubble.
The big collapse and the cleanup are affecting both subway and street traffic in the area. There is no subway One line service between 96th Street and 136th Street.
Emergency crews were working with chain saws and their bare hands to clear the debris.
