Thinking ahead... Toddlers and Christmas Trees
A little early but I have had this on my mind lately.
What did / will moms of toddlers do this year to protect child from tree and vice versa?
I thought I would just leave the ornaments off it all together and make sure its secure, maybe tie to wall. But now I am not sure that is enough, should we bypass a tree this year? I *really* don't want to

I have been wondering the same thing. I can't stand the thought of not having a tree....but I can only imagine that Nick would be a terror with the ornaments, etc.

We will be giving up our real tree and getting a fake one so Jack doesn't eat the needles. Then just plan to keep ornaments out of reach and say "no, jack, don't touch the tree" a whole lot!

We had a small real tree with no ornaments on the bottom section.

WE put up a few gates of the play yard around it.
Not very attractive, but it helps.

I guess I will be saying no marissa don't touch the tree alot I can not have a tree then it doesn't feel like christmas. We are going to put it up against a wall and attached it to something so it doesn't fall. I was thinking about investing in a fake tree as well but I like the smell of a real tree plus I have no place to store the fake tree after christmas

We kept an eye on Emma (and this year Jeremy), we didnt put any glass or special ornaments on the bottom.

I'm going to out the tree in a room that I can gate off...I will take James in there to look at the tree every night...but he will not be able to roam into that room on his own accord.
although I will not be using any tinsel anywhere in my house...I think that its too dangerous.

I think a gate is a good idea, but maybe if I just try to constantly teach my 2 year old son not to touch, (what a headache!) then maybe when he's around other Christmas tree's he will know to look not touch....

I have thought about this as well and I feel I will just teach my son not to touch it because when I go to relatives houses hes gonna need to know that anyhow. To be honest Im not as afraid of him touching as I am my dogs lol.

That is true about the dogs!! I have 2 cats and last year I caught them literally climbing the tree and hanging off it!!!!

Thank ladies!
I know I feel silly making special arrangements for the tree, I mean I am sure my parents didn't do this, they just kept us away!
Its just that Aidan has seriously entered the climbing monkey-dom age, even in the same room with him no matter how many times I say no and praise proper sitting in the chairs he is climbing over the backs of them, hanging from the curtain ties backs, trying to get over gates.... I know it will pass soon but I think Christmas will be right in the middle of this phase!

My son was 9 months for his 1st xmas and 21 months for his second..
The first one was more difficult than the first.. as hekept wanting to climb under the tree and look at the lights. He was so cute though!
Both years we anchored the tree with fishing line near the top and because it was real a LOAD of water in the base... all as safety reasons.. All of the non breakable ornaments year one we put on near the bottom, year 2 our son put on.. Some had the green plastic "hooks" and some had just the ribbon... he loved helping.. pretty much thought who he was.. lol... We had so much fun going over the colors of the lights with him.. I could never imagine not having a tree..
As long as you are a parent who doesnt let your child stick their fork in the outlets you can handle Xmas!! I promise! 
OH--As far as the needles went, there were a few times he went to put them into his mouth, at first we didnt say anything cause we wanted to see what he was gonna do, and he picked it up, looked at it went to put it into his mouth and tasted I guess the sap, and wrinkled his entire face like, "OMG what the frig did I just taste.. ICK-get it out.." LOL... and didnt touch it again that year.. the second year, he went to pick them up and I just told him that the ones on the ground go in the garbage.. he was fine with that.. it was like a game tho.. lol...
