insurance issues, DH thinks I am nutty-update

so, a huge issue I had at beginning of pregnancy was the fact that I would be leaving my job.
I went cobra nutty...making sure and confirming almost daily that I would be covered.

so I made my first payment of 355 this month, I am covered till 7/31. next payment is due 8/1. DH will be able to insure us through his job on 8/1. I currently have BCBS, and luck enough, DH will be covering us with BCBS.

I want to pay the next cobra payment just to make sure everything is okay. I don't want any lapsed time. DH thinks I am throwing out 355, but i want to be safe then sorry. i see dh again tomorrow, he will have all insurance info for me to look at, and i am going to call provider, just wondering if anyone has insight.

thanks!

I am a nut like you- I would much rather be safe than sorry. What if there is a 30 day lapse or something crazy happens???

Re: insurance issues, DH thinks I am nutty

I'm kind of in the same boat. DH starts a new job this coming Monday and insurance is effective after 2 weeks. I need him to confirm that because I would hate to pay $423 for no reason. As long as his new company tells me I'm insured, then I'm going to cancel Cobra. I'd rather have that money in my pocket than theirs.

I agree with you....$355 is nothing for the peace of mind to know that if by some small chance there is an issue with DH's insurance during the transiton, that you will be covered.

Can't they refund you if you end up being covered by DH's insurance?

Re: insurance issues, DH thinks I am nutty

Your DH should be able to find out for sure from his HR dept. if he/you are covered immediately, or if there is a wait. At my current job, I was covered from the day I started because I started at the beginning of the month. Had I started after the 15th, I wouldn't have been covered until the 1st of the following month. At my last job, I was covered immediately regardless of what date I started. Every place is different, but there should be a written policy and you should be able to base your decision to keep your cobra based on that. There's NO advantage to having cobra AND ins. thru DH at the same time - you'd be wasting money.

I would pay the cobra! I wouldn't be comfortable until I got a new card in the mail with both your name and DH's name as being covered!

Re: insurance issues, DH thinks I am nutty

honestly, I'd call both Cobra and the new insurance co and ask what you should do.

If you overpaid, wouldn't Cobra give your money back? I thought with things like insurance that if you over pay they pro-rate you, and then refund the difference. I would call and ask - Also I would want to be sure I was covered too - So I don't blame you for wanting to make that payment.

Re: insurance issues, DH thinks I am nutty

Most companies will even give you a grace period of 30 days to make the payment...so you could probably even pay by 8/31 but I understand your concern. Can you call or check with your DH's co. to confirm the 8/1 coverage?

Re: insurance issues, DH thinks I am nutty-update

update: I wanted to add an update incase anyone ever needs to search for cobra info.

So as it turns out, DH's insurance co asked me to get a certificate of insurance from cobra. I should be getting that in a few days. Once that is turned in, then it looks like I am good to go.

The great thing that I learned is that I have breathing room. My next cobra payment is due 8/1. However, there is a 30 day grace period. I have until 8/30 to keep my coverage, but I won't actually be "covered" until I make payment, all bills will then be paid retroactive. So that is great news. I can make sure I am covered on Leo's insurance before I actually have to cancel cobra.

Thanks!
